Title: Amish have low cancer rate, but why?

The Amish offered a rare opportunity for Dr. Judith Westman and her team.

The members of Holmes County's Amish population all descend from 100 original settlers to the area about 200 years ago. Because they remain relatively sequestered and marry within the community, their family trees are heavily intertwined.

That makes for an interesting gene pool.

Researchers already know that certain types of rare genetic disorders are more common among the Amish, and they are interested in looking for information about more common medical conditions, including cancer.

Westman, director of human genetics at Ohio State University's Comprehensive Cancer Center, fully expected to find some genetic links to cancer within the 92 families she studied.

But in a paper recently published in the journal Cancer Causes & Control, she and her fellow researchers reveal that they found no such markers and instead are left wondering whether the Amish have genetic differences that protect them from cancer.

The study looked at cancer incidence reported by 92 families in Holmes County. The researchers relied on reports from the families and from a state database of known cancer cases. They then compared incidence in that population with incidence among all white Ohioans.

Rates are based on the average number of people per 100,000 who developed the disease each year between 1996 and 2003.

The overall rate of cancer in Amish adults was 390, compared with 647 in the population at large.

The low rates of tobacco use among the Amish explained some of that, but not all. Rates of tobacco-related cancers were 82 for the Amish and 222 for others.

But rates of cancers not linked to smoking or other tobacco use also were lower: 308 compared with 425.

Westman has no explanation but suspects a combination of factors could be at play.

The Amish lifestyle is different, for one. They eat a lot of food that they grow or raise and rarely consume processed foods. They tend to get more physical activity, and even though they sometimes are overweight, obesity is rare, she said.

Andy Yoder, a second-year Ohio State medical student who grew up in an Amish home in Sugarcreek, said he wonders about the role of stress.

"They all have their families and friends close by, which is helpful."

Another difference worth exploring is that Amish people live in rural areas and have less exposure to pollutants than people who live in cities, Yoder said.

Then there are the genetic mysteries that might contribute to lower cancer incidence. That's something Westman and others would love to know more about, but "that is a statistical genetic nightmare."

"Scientifically, it's a whole lot easier to check for something that's there," she said. "It's like trying to find a black hole to check for something that's protective rather than causative."

Holmes County Health Commissioner Dr. D.J. McFadden said he welcomes research that uncovers medical information about the Amish and that might help unravel mysteries about diseases that affect everyone.

"We're constantly looking for ways to improve the health of the nation, and if you have some things that you can identify in communities with low incidences of cancer, it makes sense to follow some of those practices," he said.

"We have what we call the Mediterranean diet; maybe somewhere down the road people might talk about the Amish or the Anabaptist lifestyle."

It may be the hard work, the natural farm foods, the moderation in creature comforts. It may be genetic - but as their very limited gene pool has reduced the susceptibility to cancer it has, at the same time, increased the risk of other ailments -- possibly ailments that kill them before the ages when cancer frequently manifests itself. Maybe it's their snazzy clothes. Maybe it's their total avoidance of any education beyond elementary school.

But, deep down, you and I know that it's their abjuration of electronics -- no TV, no internet, no cell phones.

It doesn't exist and they don't get the vaccines.

ever been to the Amana Colonies? my dad trades with the Amish living by him south of Fairfield Iowa and you are correct about them not being big on new fangled stuff like T.V. it took a long time to get them to put slow moving vehicle triangles on their buggies and even longer for rear view mirrors. They still plant and harvest by hand, but they will have problems when monsanto's GMO corn starts to cross pollinate with theirs. there were a few Amish guys I knew growing up in Iowa who had some real nice big block hot-rods.

I wonder about autism among the Amish?

I read an article awhile back about Autism among the Amish. There was ever only one documented case in PA. I think it was in the Lancaster area.

Amish have low cancer rate, but why?

A) Most don't vaccinate, or at least they didn't till recently (matched by a sudden outbreak of autism which virtually didn't exist in the Amish community till then)

B) They don't eat processed junk like most Americans, they eat natural unadulterated food.

From the article: During my visit to their home, I asked Stacey-jean to explain why she attributed the first case to vaccines.

"There's one family that we know, their daughter had a vaccine reaction and is now autistic. She was walking and functioning and a happy bright child, and 24 hours after she had her vaccine, her legs went limp and she had a typical high-pitched scream. They called the doctor and the doctor said it was fine -- a lot of high-pitched screaming goes along with it.

"She completely quit speaking," Stacey-jean said. "She completely quit making eye contact with people. She went in her own world."

This happened, Stacey-jean said, at "something like 15 months." The child is now about 8.

Thanks all for the feedback!

Maybe the medical community has to lie to cover their butts from the cave dwelling legal community.

The 2009 pandemic H1N1 influenza vaccine (swine flu vaccine) is not covered under the VICP. If you received the 2009 pandemic H1N1 influenza vaccine (swine flu vaccine) or drugs to treat or prevent H1N1 influenza such as Tamiflu, Relenza or Peramivir and think that you have been seriously injured by this vaccine or these drugs, see the Countermeasures Injury Compensation Program. About VICP

On October 1, 1988, the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986 (Public Law 99-660) created the National Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP). The VICP was established to ensure an adequate supply of vaccines, stabilize vaccine costs, and establish and maintain an accessible and efficient forum for individuals found to be injured by certain vaccines. The VICP is a no-fault alternative to the traditional tort system for resolving vaccine injury claims that provides compensation to people found to be injured by certain vaccines. The U. S. Court of Federal Claims decides who will be paid. Three Federal government offices have a role in the VICP:

* the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS);
* the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ); and
* the U.S. Court of Federal Claims (the Court).

The VICP is located in the HHS, Health Resources and Services Administration, Healthcare Systems Bureau, Division of Vaccine Injury Compensation.
