January 8, 2010. We've all heard about shortages on ammunition. Some credit the shortage to an increase in domestic demand sparked by hysteria over the election of a Democratic president, who some believe will attempt to ban or restrict ammunition sales. A more likely reason is the impact of the two wars we're fighting, which create a demand for about 1.5 billion rounds of ammunition per year -- ammunition is being produced in huge quantities in the US, but it's ending up in Baghdad instead of Cabela's.
Whatever the causes, the shortages are real and they can screw up your plans.
Here's some numbers on ammo that I have on backorder with Midway USA. Note that none of this ammo has actually been shipped to me yet, so the wait times could prove even longer:
(Order placed, ammo, expected ship date, days to ship):
07-28-2009 CCI .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire (WMR) 2/27/2010 214 days
09-25-2009 Winchester Super-X .375 Winchester 200 Grain Power-Point 1/15/2010 112 days

If you need ammo for your 2010 big game hunts, order it now. It may take months and months to actually get it in your hands.
