By Noel Sheppard (Bio | Archive) A scientist in the middle of the ClimateGate scandal received economic stimulus funds last June. As NewsBusters reported on November 28, Penn State University is investigating Professor Michael Mann, the creator of the discredited "Hockey Stick Graph," for his involvement in an international attempt to exaggerate and manipulate climate data in order to advance the myth of manmade global warming. According to the conservative think tank the National Center for Public Policy Research, Mann received $541,184 in economic stimulus funds last June to conduct climate change research. With this in mind, NCPPR issued a press release Thursday asking for these funds to be returned: "It's outrageous that economic stimulus money is being used to support research conducted by Michael Mann at the very time he’s under investigation by Penn State and is one of the key figures in the international Climategate scandal. Penn State should immediately return these funds to the U.S. Treasury," said Tom Borelli, Ph.D., director of the National Center's Free Enterprise Project. Professor Mann is currently under investigation by Penn State University because of activities related to a closed circle of climate scientists who appear to have been engaged in agenda-driven science. Emails and documents mysteriously released from the previously-prestigious Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom revealed discussions of manipulation and destruction of research data, as well as efforts to interfere with the peer review process to stifle opposing views. The motivation underlying these efforts appears to be a coordinated strategy to support the belief that mankind's activities are causing global warming. [...] The $541,184 grant is for three years and was initiated in June 2009. Potentially adding insult to injury, Penn State received additional stimulus funds to investigate the impact of climate change last week: This grant appears to have nothing to do with Mann's department. However, given the high-profile the university is currently under as a result of his involvement in ClimateGate, it seems absurd that any federal funds involving climate change would be going to this school while it is investigating its chief proponent of this myth. Maybe more importantly, why are economic stimulus funds being given to a university for scientific research in the first place, especially one with such political overtones? As NCPPR noted in its release: Despite the obviously controversial nature of this funding and its recipient, I can identify absolutely no media coverage concerning the matter. I'm sure now that NCPPR has exposed this hypocrisy, press outlets across the fruited plain will be aggressively investigating economic stimulus grants to Mann and others involved in the ClimateGate scandal in order to inform the public about how their tax dollars are being spent. Of course, I'm not holding my breath.

January 14, 2010 - 09:44 ET In the face of rising unemployment and record-breaking deficits, policy experts at the National Center for Public Policy Research are criticizing the Obama Administration for awarding a half million dollar grant from the economic stimulus package to Penn State Professor Michael Mann, a key figure in the Climategate controversy.
A nearly $1.9 million grant from the National Science Foundation is enabling a Penn State-led group of researchers to continue studies on the potential effects of climate change on the spread of infectious diseases, such as malaria and dengue. The grant is part of federal stimulus funding authorized under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
"It's no wonder that Obama's stimulus plan is failing to produce jobs. Taxpayer dollars aren't being used in the ways most likely to spur job creation. The stimulus was not sold to the public as a way to reward a loyalist in the climate change debate. Nor was the stimulus sold as a way to promote the Obama Administration's position on the global warming theory...As is often the case, political considerations corrupt the distribution of government funds," said Deneen Borelli, a fellow with the National Center's Project 21 black leadership network.

The Government's expert had to accept that this was not the case. * The film claims that a study showed that polar bears had drowned due to disappearing arctic ice. It turned out that Mr Gore had misread the study: in fact four polar bears drowned and this was because of a particularly violent storm. * The film threatens that global warming could stop the Gulf Stream throwing Europe into an ice age: the Claimant's evidence was that this was a scientific impossibility. * The film blames global warming for species losses including coral reef bleaching. The Government could not find any evidence to support this claim. * The film suggests that the Greenland ice covering could melt causing sea levels to rise dangerously. The evidence is that Greenland will not melt for millennia. * The film suggests that the Antarctic ice covering is melting, the evidence was that it is in fact increasing. * The film suggests that sea levels could rise by 7m causing the displacement of millions of people. In fact the evidence is that sea levels are expected to rise by about 40cm over the next hundred years and that there is no such threat of massive migration. * The film claims that rising sea levels has caused the evacuation of certain Pacific islands to New Zealand. The Government are unable to substantiate this and the Court observed that this appears to be a false claim. Now, I don't agree with Gore on many attributes; but we can't dismiss the nexus or the focus of attention. Agreeing with some crack-pot "anti-Gore" sentiment makes you look like a climber. I haven't a dog in the fight, PSUSA, but as you point out the goal for all should be accuracy. Having been the subject of newspaper articles where bums lied and I was under orders not to say a word, I'm here to tell you many initial reports are inaccurate and incomplete. And believe me an arrest isn't an indicator of guilt. Our jails are filled w/innocent people. As you accurately state we are missing a complete investigation in this article. Given the lie that is glowbull warming, and my proximity to PSU, I'm inclined to believe that Mann received at least that much money for being a paid liar for the Climate Scam. If he didn't receive that money, he probably has cause for legal action so the validity of the story is actually on his shoulders.
I understand that. I dont doubt for a second that what you say is true. Some will hurt themselves to accuse a cop of brutality. IIRC that is why they invented double locking cuffs. They would intentionally bounce them against a wall them to tighten them up to cut off their own circulation. I bet, though, that the standard used to arrest a cop is a lot higher than it would be for any of us. Did he get that grant? I wouldn't doubt it. But IMO things are bad enough without making things up or getting sloppy when it comes to proof. If I was on a jury and articles like that were presented as evidence, I'd vote to acquit.

I would too. I'd want to see the paper trail. I will say this. The Mann story is national, but not in State College, PA. Mums the word in the hills. I've seen exactly one article in the local fish wrap and Mann, when asked about his emails, claimed he was being "set up." He was either not asked the standard, who, what, why series of questions by the reporter, or didn't elaborate. I thought that was an odd reply without him going into detail. I'd be pissed if I were being set up and I'd use every platform available to get my message out.
LOL! If someone told me that, I'd be like a shark that just got a whiff of blood in the water! Either he'd talk, or he would not like what I wrote about him. No way in "hell" I'd just give him a platform to spew crap like that. So much for the press on this one. And thank God for the internet. The little town where I used to live used to have ice skating almost every winter. Haven't for a long time but this year they are again because the lakes are frozen so hard that it is safe. And most of the "whole f***ing world," or at least a big part of it, is having record breaking cold temperatures. So how could it be "melting down"? In other words, you are stating that you believe it because of what was done in the past. No actually I ran into an article a week or ten days ago about the Professor being under investigation and in danger of losing his job. I just did not feel any compelling need to go chase down something you could prove or disprove to yourself with 5 minutes on a good search engine. The kind of science he does is routinely funded by grants and if it concerned me greatly I could probably chase down other references. It is you who are challenging the article and in effect denying the information presented. Of course that you have no validation for that it is of even lesser weight than that of the article since it is a transparent artifice to cast doubt upon the information by stating your OPINION. You are most welcome to your opinion but when you play games I will challenge those games. would you like to speculate on the logical consequences of putting another trillion tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, once the shade from particulates fall out of the atmosphere (in about five years) and the co2 persists for another couple hundred years?
How about saying that over the last 150 years the population of mankind has increased from about 500,000,000 to over 6,500,000,000,000. And these lazy people on this web site don't realize that this HUGE change has set forward their own demise.

No. However, I would comment that while that sounds like a big number you are talking about an entire planetary atmospheric system so I would ask - from what sources, what means, and to what effect? As well would be comparative studies which: A. Validate those gases i.e, "what gases? Then demonstrate with good science (meaning mathematics and actual data - not fudged data invented at the CRU to falsely tilt the image)that the volume increase is significant in relation to the planetary atmospheric system and attributable to human action - beyond just living? (Of note here is the work of Prof. James E. Lovelock, Atmospheric Chemist, and his "Gaia Hypothesis" which asserts, using actual sciece, that the system is a self correcting one which when taken out of equilibrium will adjust over time back to equilibrium.) B. Demonstrate via actual data the effects of those hypothesised extra gases. We do know, from actual science not Glowbull Wahlarmingism, that based on the analysis of the ice cores analyzed by Paleoclimatologists that CO2 is a lagging indicator of a warming climate. The average, from memory, is about 60 years after the fact of warming.

good enough. Speculation is NOT science. It is the beginning of science but is NOT science. You are attempting to play "gotcha" by leading me into speculation upon a topic which is opinion only. In matters of science I prefer facts, and observations, not speculations. It is A FACT that 90% of the world's glaciers are growing. There is data which supports that. It is A FACT that since 1999 the overall global temperature has been downtrending. It is A FACT that the Antarctic Ice Cap has grown thicker. Given that the Glowbull Wahlarmists already have the territory of speculation and jiggered models nailed down I would not want to infringe upon their territory.

On Monday, NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), run by Al Gore’s chief scientific ally, Dr James Hansen, announced that last month was the hottest October on record. “This was startling,” reports the London Telegraph. “Across the world there were reports of unseasonal snow and plummeting temperatures last month, from the American Great Plains to China, and from the Alps to New Zealand. China’s official news agency reported that Tibet had suffered its “worst snowstorm ever”. In the US, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration registered 63 local snowfall records and 115 lowest-ever temperatures for the month, and ranked it as only the 70th-warmest October in 114 years.” It soon came to light that the data produced by NASA to make the claim, and in particular temperature records covering large areas of Russia, was merely carried over from the previous month. NASA had used temperature records from the naturally hotter month of September and claimed they represented temperature figures in October. When NASA was confronted with this glaring error, they then attempted to compensate for the lower temperatures in Russia by claiming they had discovered a new “hotspot” in the Arctic, despite satellite imagery clearly showing that Arctic sea ice had massively expanded its coverage by 30 per cent, an area the size of Germany, since summer 2007. The figures published by Dr Hansen’s institute are one of the primary sets of data used by the IPCC to promote its case for man-made global warming and they are widely quoted because they consistently show higher temperatures than other figures. “Yet last week’s latest episode is far from the first time Dr Hansen’s methodology has been called in question,” reports the Telegraph. “In 2007 he was forced by Mr Watts and Mr McIntyre to revise his published figures for US surface temperatures, to show that the hottest decade of the 20th century was not the 1990s, as he had claimed, but the 1930s.” Dr Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the IPCC and a close ally of Hansen, also raised eyebrows recently during a presentation in Australia, during which he claimed that global temperatures have recently been rising “very much faster” than ever as he cited a graph showing purported temperature increases over the last decade. In fact, as even the vast majority of man-made global warming advocates will concede, temperatures since 1998 have moved sideways and over the last 18 months they have clearly begun a downward trend. Whether such “mistakes” are made in genuine error or are part of a politicized push for man-made global warming to be universally accepted, and the evidence clearly suggests that latter is the case, the fact is that we can no longer tolerate the cry that “the debate is over” on man-made global warming in light of such gargantuan falsehoods. Likewise, the push for carbon emissions to be reduced by 80 per cent or more, a figure that would completely cripple western economies and lower living standards to a near third world level, can no longer be accepted as a reasonable course of action now that the primary authority on man-made global warming, the UN IPCC, has been proven to be using fraudulent data to make its case.
