ClimateGate's Michael Mann Received Stimulus Funds, Media Mum

By Noel Sheppard (Bio | Archive)
January 14, 2010 - 09:44 ET

A scientist in the middle of the ClimateGate scandal received economic stimulus funds last June.

As NewsBusters reported on November 28, Penn State University is investigating Professor Michael Mann, the creator of the discredited "Hockey Stick Graph," for his involvement in an international attempt to exaggerate and manipulate climate data in order to advance the myth of manmade global warming.

According to the conservative think tank the National Center for Public Policy Research, Mann received $541,184 in economic stimulus funds last June to conduct climate change research.

With this in mind, NCPPR issued a press release Thursday asking for these funds to be returned:

In the face of rising unemployment and record-breaking deficits, policy experts at the National Center for Public Policy Research are criticizing the Obama Administration for awarding a half million dollar grant from the economic stimulus package to Penn State Professor Michael Mann, a key figure in the Climategate controversy.

"It's outrageous that economic stimulus money is being used to support research conducted by Michael Mann at the very time he’s under investigation by Penn State and is one of the key figures in the international Climategate scandal. Penn State should immediately return these funds to the U.S. Treasury," said Tom Borelli, Ph.D., director of the National Center's Free Enterprise Project.

Professor Mann is currently under investigation by Penn State University because of activities related to a closed circle of climate scientists who appear to have been engaged in agenda-driven science. Emails and documents mysteriously released from the previously-prestigious Climate Research Unit at the University of East Anglia in the United Kingdom revealed discussions of manipulation and destruction of research data, as well as efforts to interfere with the peer review process to stifle opposing views. The motivation underlying these efforts appears to be a coordinated strategy to support the belief that mankind's activities are causing global warming. [...] The $541,184 grant is for three years and was initiated in June 2009.

Potentially adding insult to injury, Penn State received additional stimulus funds to investigate the impact of climate change last week:

A nearly $1.9 million grant from the National Science Foundation is enabling a Penn State-led group of researchers to continue studies on the potential effects of climate change on the spread of infectious diseases, such as malaria and dengue. The grant is part of federal stimulus funding authorized under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

This grant appears to have nothing to do with Mann's department. However, given the high-profile the university is currently under as a result of his involvement in ClimateGate, it seems absurd that any federal funds involving climate change would be going to this school while it is investigating its chief proponent of this myth.

Maybe more importantly, why are economic stimulus funds being given to a university for scientific research in the first place, especially one with such political overtones?

As NCPPR noted in its release:

"It's no wonder that Obama's stimulus plan is failing to produce jobs. Taxpayer dollars aren't being used in the ways most likely to spur job creation. The stimulus was not sold to the public as a way to reward a loyalist in the climate change debate. Nor was the stimulus sold as a way to promote the Obama Administration's position on the global warming theory...As is often the case, political considerations corrupt the distribution of government funds," said Deneen Borelli, a fellow with the National Center's Project 21 black leadership network.

Despite the obviously controversial nature of this funding and its recipient, I can identify absolutely no media coverage concerning the matter.

I'm sure now that NCPPR has exposed this hypocrisy, press outlets across the fruited plain will be aggressively investigating economic stimulus grants to Mann and others involved in the ClimateGate scandal in order to inform the public about how their tax dollars are being spent.

Of course, I'm not holding my breath. Subscribe to *Agriculture-Environment*

The IPCC is doing exactly what it was created to do. Its charter plainly states that global warming is anthropogenic.

What happens when the world population climbs dramatically without assessment?

The IPCC is doing exactly what it was created to do. Its charter plainly states that global warming is anthropogenic. Its sole purpose was to lay out a strategy for dealing with it. It was never intended to be a scientific investigation of the validity of AGW.

Climategate emails force Al Gore to cancel talk at Copenhagen

Al Gore's scheduled December 16th speech with the auspicious title "Climate Conclusion" has been canceled amid the scandal of Climategate. About 3,000 Danes had tickets for the Berlinske Media event that was announced in August. Al Gore has been the poster child for Global Warming, but has been under scrutiny from scientists who argue against the findings of humans' involvement in our climate. This was highlighted in the documentary The Great Global Warming Swindle. A British court had ruled that there were 9 factual errors [LOL !] in An Inconvenient Truth, yet it still won an Academy Award in 2007, along with the Nobel Prize shared with the IPCC. Again in November, mistakes were found in Al Gore's new book begin with the cover. While some are trying to explain away the cancellation, it seems pretty obvious that there is too much skepticism to show up in a large public forum like this. Mr. Gore had to deal with some hard questions at a book signing this past week, and had the readers escorted away rather than discuss Climategate. See that video at the bottom of this post. Unfortunately this apears like a direct attack, but this is all about getting the truth out.

The conference on Global Climate is still scheduled to include 100 world leaders, but has come under attack for fraud and deceit. On Tuesday, Australia's Senate voted against their Carbon Trading bill, a measure that Prime Minister Kevin Rudd

Last week, Penn State's Michael Mann was placed under investigation after being implicated for his 'trick' in changing old data to make current temperatures look warmer. Unfortunately the old original data was erased, a serious blow to the scientific process. CEI intends to sue NASA Goddard for Climate Change fraud based on 'Freedom of Information'. On Tuesday, The University of East Anglia's Phil Jones was forced to step down as director of the world renown Climate Research Unit due to an investigation of his involvement in the fraud.

Rasumssen Reports released today from ClimateDepot.com shows the distrust more Americans have on this issue:

"Fifty-nine percent (59%) of Americans say it’s at least somewhat likely that some scientists have falsified research data to support their own theories and beliefs about global warming. Thirty-five percent (35%) say it’s Very Likely. Just 26% say it’s not very or not at all likely that some scientists falsified data. This skepticism does not appear to be the result of the recent disclosure of e-mails confirming such data falsification as part of the so- called “Climategate” scandal. Just 20% of Americans say they’ve followed news reports about those e-mails Very Closely, while another 29% have followed them Somewhat Closely."

This past year, The Skeptics Handbook was released by Australia's own Joanne Nova as a way to simplify the debate with four main points.

1. The Greenhouse signature is missing. 2. The strongest evidence was the ice cores, but newer, more detailed data turned the theory inside out. 3. Temperature is not rising. 4. Carbon Dioxide is already doing almost all of the warming it can do.

you guys buy every exxon/AEI-funded warming denial that comes down the pike.

Delightful. You truly are addicted to logical fallacies and specious reasoning. Here we get a "twofer the price of one" i.e. Guilt by Association a well known relative of the Red Herring. As well it amounts to Argumentum Ad Hominem as the implied attack is against me personally and is not based upon any factual data. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From the above link on Guilt by Association:

"Exposition:

Guilt by Association is the attempt to discredit an idea based upon disfavored people or groups associated with it. This is the reverse of an Appeal to Misleading Authority, and might be justly called "Appeal to Anti-Authority". An argument to authority argues in favor of an idea based upon associating an authority figure with the idea, whereas Guilt by Association argues against an idea based upon associating it with disreputable people or groups.

Senator Joseph McCarthy Exposure:

McCarthyism was a specific version of Guilt by Association in which an individual, organization, or idea was associated in some way with communism. An association was made between the target of McCarthyism and communism by linking both through some shared idea. ..." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So, you're in good company there with ol' "Tail Gunner" Joe McCarthy.

logic demands that you answer the question: what happens if we put another trillion tons of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere?

That is a speculation - key word in your attempt to shore up a dying hypothesis "IF". "IF" is not science it is S-P-E-C-U-L-A-T-I-O-N. Try it on someone who hasn't studied logic, rhetoric, and the "Scientific Method" - you'll get a lot further. (Take Bucky for example.) A MODEL which is all that the Glowbull Warming Alarmists have is just that a MODEL - it is a mathematical computation based upon variables and parameters controlled by the person running the MODEL. A MODEL is not reality it is a simulacrum of reality NOT reality. Neither is it a crystal ball nor any of the other equally reliable means of forecasting the future such as studying chicken guts. You can take a Climate Model and show that the earth will turn into a ball of expanding fire last week depending upon how you jigger the variables and input data. A model is just that a model. Science contrariwise is observations, and mathematics. It is taking the observed data and fitting it into a coherent picture. In a coherent picture declining global average temperatures do not equal Glowbull Warming - no matter how long you hold your breath. The "CRU" data is false, and is shown to be false in the words and e-mails of the very people responsible for the L-I-E-S.

I would continue but do not wish to entertain your false argument or attempted "gotcha" any further.

Exactly.

We know from ACTUAL data and readings that the Polar Ice Caps are growing, as are most of the worlds major glaciers.

So, if more water is bound up in ice what logical inference can we make from that about sea levels?

Well lessee' - ice is made from water, water comes from the oceans, so more ice = less water. I suspect, but do not have the data to hand, that we might logically infer that sea levels are receding not rising. This is what has occurred at the onset of every Ice Age - and based upon the 11,500 year cyclical advances and retreats of the ice - we're overdue or about on the mark for a new ICE AGE.

Which greenhouse gasses would those be? If you are talking about CO2, the logic is that we would reach saturation, if we haven't already, and increasing CO2 beyond that point would have no effect. BTW, water vapor is the biggest greenhouse gas and the Earth is not a greenhouse. Greenhouses warm because of the lack of convection rather than the content of their gasses. The Earth has a lot of convection.

Back to CO2, FYI, the Earth is at historic lows for CO2 content despite the recent rise. Where is the evidence that a rise in CO2, or a rise in temp for that matter, would be detrimental?

It reminds me of Churchills comment on fanaticism:

"A fanatic is someone who can't change their mind and won't change the subject." ~ Winston Churchill

"One of the least understood strategies of the world revolution now moving rapidly toward its goal is the use of mind control as a major means of obtaining the consent of the people who will be subjects of the New World Order." K.M. Heaton, The National Educator

Back to CO2, FYI, the Earth is at historic lows for CO2 content despite the recent rise

original intent apparently is unwilling to follow the logic: if co2 is a greenhouse gas, and we've put a trillion extra tons of the stuff into the atmosphere...

nevermind. it wont matter when jesus comes back.

Is Global Warming a Religion?

"If you love wealth more than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, depart from us in peace. We ask not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you. May your chains rest lightly upon you and may posterity forget that you were our countrymen.”—Samuel Adams

You're holding out on us, and I want to know just exactly what will happen if we put a trillion extra tons of the stuff into the atmosphere within the time period you refer to.

I'm breathless with anticipation.
