post homemade songs here. post criticism of posted songs. remix posted songs (if you're equipped to do so and individual tracks are posted). add tracks (bass, drums, harmony, boston symphony, etc) to posted songs (with songwriter's permission). remove and replace tracks on posted songs (with songwriter's permission). start from scratch and redo posted songs (with songwriter's permission). post your qualifications as a voodoo adept in case of gruesome copyright violations. keep in mind that posting an original song here is proof of its existence at time of posting. post poems that need music. post music that needs words. post ideas that need words and music. dont be discouraged if nobody seems to be turned on enough to work on your (e)all the above. for my songs: anything goes, with one request: you post the results. my native format: wav, 44.1 kHZ, 16 bit. so if TSHTF, this technology is probably gonna be supported by the military government, and everyday people are not gonna be able to afford it. if that's the case, CNC operators wont have to worry about interruptions to power supply or replacement parts.
we don't do a lot of government gigs and most if not all of those are actually requests from subcontractors. though awhile back we did some lexan radiation shields for NASA, glue those pigs up was fun due to the arc we had to make an assembly jig.
back to the goodle days apropos of nothing... cold on the shoulder
back in the goodle days (i'm talking about the old goodle days) the signal-to-noise ratio was pretty high... the sounds you heard were pretty much reality, except for the human blowhards that probably have existed from the day humans first invented language... other than that blowhard noise, the signal was pretty clear: if you heard a lion roaring, that meant there was a lion in the neighborhood. now we've got professional blowhards who are paid to degrade the signal-to- noise ratio for political and religious reasons, and we've got people with nothing better to do than add their noise to an already cluttered soundscape, just for something to do... ...so it's hard, anymore, to tell exactly what the truth is... because you got to separate out the most likely truth from the bullshit peddled by the professional liars... ...and the search for truth is made more difficult by the sheer volume of noise that's generated by people who have nothing to do but shoot their mouths off.
digital methods of recording improved the signal-to-noise ratio... now, there's no static at all due to the recording, so the liars and motormouths can record their lies and bullshit with no degradation of the technical signal-to-noise ratio whatsoever. good deal.
now then... here's my theory about how i came to be so particular about the signal-to-noise ratio... i grew up in the country... so far out in the country that, when television finally arrived in our living room, i couldnt tolerate it... i was used to being alone, a hunter and a fisherman, listening to and watching reality. then i grew up, went to college, and, desperate to escape the unreality of college, joined the military to go to flight school... and although there's a certain amount of luck involved in my surviving 35 years of flying, there remains one fact: you had to tell yourself the truth about the conditions and your capabilities or you died. in other words, the signal-to-noise ratio in your brain will have to be pretty high if you're gonna survive as a helicopter pilot. so i've been conditioned, since childhood, to pay attention to the signal-to- noise ratio.
it's just too goddamned bad, i guess, that humans are compulsive noisemakers.

once you've figured out the music production machinery (like your DAW and the hardware interface) and you've got (what you think is) a presentable product, you have to find a place to put it on the web. that's trial and (mostly) error. supload seems to work best. zshare sometimes puts uncontrollable commercials on top of the music. nobody will be worth a shit in the long run, as economic pressures overtake decency.
more songs from ramshackle women, late 70s, with minor word changes... about these songs... the idea of "she wants a dad" is unfair, but i cant figure out exactly why. "you already got a guy" is haywire technically, and it's a measure of human capacity for self-deception that i listened to it for three or four days, thinking it was wonderful (relatively). the problem is... when you're learning how to play the guitar and run the machinery, and you record a few songs in a batch, by the time you've recorded those songs, the knowledge and skill you had when you started recording are obsolete. i persist in using zshare, despite its drawbacks, because it gives me a "delete code" without having to sign up. one other thing, here... when you're judging your performance, it helps to expose yourself to ridicule, to get the best out of yourself... so in that sense, you 4um people are guinea pigs, as i run your (imagined?) catcalls in my head.
somebody had thrust "dune" on me, and i finally read the son-of-a-bitch. that probably got me to thinking about female-centric human breeding programs. mama's boys and drama queens
john and diane together again i've been working on this idea for a couple weeks, and this is the first complete version, the first vocal that didnt have unacceptable or unfixable error... and it's the first mix... it hasnt cooled off since i recorded it, so there's about a 99% chance that it needs a lot more work, but i just cant hear what needs to be done, yet... it will take another week or so to come up with the final mix... not to mention word changes and guitar haywireness i cant hear yet. this is your chance to make suggestions for word changes, because it's likely this vocal isnt gonna survive, regardless. anyhow, you gotta wonder about people who know what they're doing, people with "good ears"... how long does it take them to mix an album, i wonder. this has not been played through anything but sony MDR-G45 headphones... $15 headphones that sound best (of the four or five sets of trashy headphones i have) when i listen to music on the internet... once the song has cooled off, i'll listen to it through different earphones and my speakers, which are tinny little computer speakers, but it's a lost cause... there doesnt seem to be any standard frequency response to any of this machinery, so you wind up making compormises. not to mention general inexperience and ineptitude.
i'm running up against my limitations, here. the most serious limitation seems to be lack of musical imagination... there doesnt seem to be any lack of philosophical imagination, since i've just written a song about family love when it becomes more obvious every day that the only thing that matters is "might makes right". so, here's the six-pack mix of "john and diane"... because the only rational reason for writing a song is that mixing requires altering your state of consciousness... which involves beer. in the good old days, it involved lots of marijauana, too.... so much that you'd forget what the song sounded like in the time it took to walk across the room, rewind, and hit the "play" button... so every play was like hearing it for the first time. the good old days. . there. you rotarians feel better now? i got to admit that "might gonna come unglued" line worries me.
the night bobby died "toad" was el toro marine pilot slang for woman in the 60s... dont ask me why... the sandpiper was a marine pilot hangout. this is the second version of this song at this post... i thought i sang one thing, but apparently i sang something else, and didnt notice... yes, with this software you can correct yourself, one word at a time. the implications, if you're an expert at synching audio with video, are this song's got about a million edits and punch ins... it's the same old deal... maybe i'll redo it once i learn it... doubtful.
it's billy cryin' part of the fun of listening to a song is trying to figure out what it's about... but i'm gonna say that this song is about girls with a baby. i was reminded of this song by a chris rea song that somebody posted on theoildrum... "road to hell" ... lots of the same chords, and i played billy crying at the same tempo, wanting to get that same groove... never happen. songs have minds of their own... you can have a very specific idea, and work for days on tht idea, but the goddamn song goes off on its own... you cant reason with it. same with the music... i can understand myself being too hamhanded and limited to play like that chris rea band, but you'd think i coulda come closer.
austin city limits unfinished this is a collection of words and music that kept pestering me... the problem seems to be that most of the words are nonsense... placeholders. i can use the music somewhere else, but maybe there's not enough direction to the words to finish the song... this happens a lot, at least to me... you have to abandon an idea that doesnt go anywhere. you got to wonder, though, about the "austin city limits" line... i may be getting childish in my old age... infantile ego creeping out of the woodwork. writing songs is cheaper than a shrink
there's always the possibility that the "austin city limits" line has nothing to do with me... maybe that's the biggest ego trap of all, songwriters misunderstanding their own songs. songwriters dont seem to know where the songs come from, and they dont really know what the songs mean... the perfect song is so ambiguous that everybody thinks it's about them. so, maybe the limits to the city of austin have something to do with alex jones' limits... and this forum's limits, and th limits of beliefs expressed on this forum. who knows? i am not obliged to stew over it.

if you understand musical people, then you'll know that just about anything, including words, including bad words, will serve as an excuse to play a lick you've just learned... play it over and over and over again... because it pleases you. so that's one explanation of where songs come from, especially songs like this that dont seem to make much sense. nobody knows... take dougie mcclean's caledonia... you got to listen to it a million times to figure out the structure, but it grabs you the first time you hear it. but the words of caledonia... if you're a scot... as far as i can tell, i'm not much of a scot, but the words..
so i'm not a scot, but i feel the same way about a little valley in southern oregon. you got to wonder what would happen if dougie's song was about palestine rather than caledonia.

thinking about earphones... my mainstays are those cheap sonys mdr-g45 and not-so-cheap akg k240 mkII... back in the day, the only thing i used were the original akg 240 m... the cleanest sound i'd ever heard... but this new version seems muddy compared to the sonys. now i'm wondering if sony is catering to the boomers (the biggest generational market ever), who are getting to an age where their high freqs might be going away. i'm suspicious of my own hearing, after being strapped to noisy machinery for thousands of hours and listening to music at high volume for more thousands of hours... those little high freq cilia, once they're bent, dont come back... not to mention my age. who knows? but sony never misses a trick. so, it could be that i can try and try and try to reconcile the sound of the two earphones by jiggering the eq in reaper, but maybe it's a lost cause.
about playing keyboard bass... there's a feature in reaper that allows you to separate, then quantize individual noises if they are isolated from other noises... for instance, drum beats or bass notes... then you can quantize those noises, which means you can align them precisely to the beat... this works okay if your original timing is accurate enough ... for instance, if you play notes that fall within the right quantize window, the note aligns properly, but if you play a note that falls outside proper window, the note aligns to the previous or succeeding beat instead of the right beat... well, that's just a matter of practice... but quantizing the note to the "right place" screws up the groove and wrecks the feel of the music... it gives the music a mechanical feeling. or you can slow the song down enough that you're able to keep up, which is okay for learning the part, but results in not-quite-right bass parts. there's no substitute for playing the part live, which means that there's no subsitute for practicing. the practicing is coming along okay, but it requires lots of naps while my brain rewires itself... and while my playing sounds okay, the bass lines are primitive... i'm hoping i'll eventually be able to play well enough to play more complicated bass lines.
since it really doesnt matter one way or another, i do what i feel like doing. for the last little while, i have NOT felt like playing or singing or recording, which bothered me a little... it bothered me at least to the point that i tried to figure out what i was supposed to be doing.... "supposed", according to whom, nobody knows. anyhow, to fill up the flat spot, i've decided to go the next level with the keyboard, which is a technical thing that has nothing to do with making music... it's a matter of learning enough and getting the equipment, in this case a $5 cable that hooks the keyboard directly to the computer... a MIDI to USB, cable. so... is this an instance of getting bogged down in the machinery to the detriment of the music? ...maybe not, because before, when i had no machinery at all except a guitar, i'd hit these flat spots. sometimes boredom forces you to the guitar, even if you dont feel like playing, and sometimes, if the bordom gets desperate enough, a song comes out. i got to admit i'm getting sick and tired of playing these same old songs as i'm learning how to run the equipment and the software.

the key crippler will be the power our service requirements is 440 3 phase in excess of 1200 amps if we lose just one leg of the service may as well turn out the lights. we could still run with the dust collection system down but lose either the air compressor or the vacuum pump and even if we wanted we could not operate as the CNC requires both for anything to happen when one pushes the cycle start button. in fact without air the machine won't even boot up.
