Jack Kerouac was one of those writers who reinvented literature. He climbed in James Joyce’s stream of consciousness car then careened down the streets of Beat poetry and the alleyways of Bebop jazz, creating such novels as The Dharma Bums, Big Sur, and the landmark On the Road. He influenced countless writers and, some say, helped usher in the 1960s counter-culture movement.

Fellow writers were always asking Kerouac how he did what he did. So Kerouac set down 30 essentials in something he called “Belief and Technique for Modern Prose.” These tips may or may not make sense to you, but that’s Kerouac, man:

and the landmark On the Road.

There must be a rule that you can't comment on a book unless you have read it all.

I am breaking that rule. I ploughed through bout half, and realized I was wasting my time. I had, as a teen, hitched fifteen thousand miles, and this book was junk. The guy was living the life of people who need to change their life as not to steal from what the goodness society was trying to provide him with.

So the guy writes about him hitching around, playing cards in cheap hotels and drinking cheap wine with cheap girl friends, not working and not having any money and being cold and hungary and this is great Lit????

Crap - it was the common reality of 70% of Americans in the 1950's.

I put this right up with Andy Whorhal's (sp) soup can "masterpiece".

Thanks for posting this Deasy!

Anger? as a first reaction to get your a$$ moving, once you see through the Media Matrix and set yourself free from your lifelong mind control collar. Sustainable? not enough to screen your intention to be free from the Talosians, who can’t read primitive emotions but know what you watch on cable/sat, read on the Internet and eat. Our ultimate weapon is laughter and amused detachment at the folly of the would-be emperors. Fear mongers HATE it when that card doesn’t work. The humiliation of being seen as merely a naked ape is THEIR big fear. Laugh the bastards off the stage! Tell your friends that we can build a real civilization from the ashes of the totalitarian game!

Don't let it get you down.
