A San Francisco man was found dead Wednesday nearly two weeks after getting stranded with his family in the snowy Oregon wilderness. James Kim's wife and kids, thankfully, were rescued from their car, but Kim set out on foot days before to seek help for his family.

This story gained national attention and underscores just how dangerous winter driving can be.

The months between November and March constitute one of the busiest road trip seasons. Snowbirds (people with summer homes in northern states from Idaho to Maine) head south in numbers large enough to give a crucial economic boost to the Sunbelt, especially California, Arizona and Florida. Add in winter sports enthusiasts, business travelers, holiday vacationers, foreign visitors and students, and it’s easy to understand why America’s highways are jammed even when temperatures plunge and driving conditions can be challenging. Story continues below [5;advertisement | your ad here

If you find yourself hitting the road during adverse conditions, consider these 10 tips to stay safe on your journey.

1. Know your route and keep abreast of weather conditions. The Web can be great source of current weather information. Make a list of Department of Transportation road-condition hotlines and consult them every few hours while you’re on the road. Pay special attention to avalanche conditions along your route, because temporary road closures are common in mountain areas.

2. Drink plenty of water. When the weather is chilly, dehydration might seem unlikely, but according to a study by the Mayo Clinic, as little as a 1-2 percent loss of body weight can lead to fatigue and reduced alertness — both of which can be deadly when you are driving in icy conditions. Carry (and drink) five to six 16-ounce bottles of water per day. Keep them with you in the passenger compartment, as they might freeze in the trunk.

3. Eat enough food. Your body needs more nourishment in cold weather than it does on a balmy summer day. Avoid candy bars and other quick-sugar-release snacks. Sandwiches, fruit or a thermos of hearty stew are much better choices. Carry a day’s worth of high-energy food and water in a warm area of your vehicle in case you are stranded for a few hours.

4. Pack a winter travel safety kit. Include a cell phone, an ice scraper and brush, a tow rope, cat litter (for use as a traction aid), blankets, a good flashlight, a candle, matches, a good book, a portable weather radio and a can of lock de-icer. (Never use hot water on glass or locks — it will refreeze and create a bigger problem.) Here’s a more detailed list of road trip supplies.

Poor fool, just wait until all four of his brakes lock all at once, pack a nice lunch indeed!

Here's a tip.

If trucks are going "too slow for you", chances are its because the roads suck.

If I had a $$$ for every time some moron ended up in a ditch because he was in a Big Hurry... I laugh at them as I pass them by.

I'll give you one not so well know tip to land softly if do you lose control.

Don't ever look at poles or trees or anything that will hurt to hit. Always look for a soft spot. 99% of the time, you will land exactly where you are looking.

I wondered how I always managed to miss everything when I was out of control. I found out that it was because I always looked for a soft place. I've even landed backwards in a driveway and once on a lawn between two trees.

I've noticed that 4x4 SUVs and pickups are the most dangerous on slick roads, especially earlier on in the winter season. My guess is that the drivers aren't savvy enough to separate the vehicle's superior starting traction from braking traction.

As far as big trucks, I remember driving through a terrible blizzard a few years ago in my 01 Mustang, going about 45 on an Interstate. These semis would come along doing 55 - 60, and I thought maybe I could keep up, let them clear a path for me and all that, no dice, it was like driving a speedboat or something. There was just too much snowy slush on the road for a passenger car to cope with at that speed, simple physics, tire diameters, ground clearance.

In 2007, the FBI reported on concern about white supremacists recruiting soldiers, saying "hundreds" of neo-Nazis were in the active military. But in April, a Department of Homeland Security report on extremism that reiterated much the same point was widely criticized by veterans groups and some conservative politicians as being unpatriotic, leading the Justice Department to retract the DHS report.

Critics acknowledge that extremism in the Army is a touchy political subject.

If you didn't end up seeing the trucks in the ditch, they made it because they were heavy, and there was no ice. The heavier the load the better off you are. Driving on ice in a truck is scary, no matter how heavy you are. You can't even touch the brakes unless you're going real slow to begin with.

But there are stupid truckers out there. I"ve seen plenty of them.

Another thing that pissed me off were 4 wheelers that passed me on bad icy roads, came back into my lane and slowed down, forcing me to brake. It's not me that would have died.

As a driver of sporty coupes I get that a lot, from both yokels and (when I drive in town) oldsmobuicks. What is it with these clowns, do they get extra points for passing? Surely everyone can't be in this much of a hurry for agreed upon reason to endanger the rest of us?

If you are in a two wheel drive car put a hundred pounds or more of sand in the trunk.

lol...pack a lunch indeed.
