Acetone as an Additive

This project page was created as an adjunct to the following article by Louis LaPointe, which we recommend as an introduction to the subject.

Acetone In Fuel Said to Increase Mileage (http://pesn.com/2005/03/17/6900069_Acetone/) - Up to 35% increase reported. Acetone said to improve the fuel's ability to vaporize completely by eliminating the surface tension that causes an increase in particulate vaporization temperature. (PESN; March 18, 2005) A growing number of people are reporting their results, as tabulated here. Most have noted increased mileage, more power, more stable idle, faster start-up, cleaner emmissions. A few have not seen an increase in mileage at the concentration of acetone they tried. Too much acetone decreases mileage. Alcohol in the fuel tends to negate the positive effects of acetone.

Main Sections:

Individual Reports - Listing of results from adding a small amount of acetone to the fuel in a wide range of vehicles. FAQ for Acetone Project - What does acetone do to the fuel system components? How much do I add? Will it hurt me? How does it affect performance?

Holy Shit... Acetone??? For fuck's sake, don't take chances with your car's performance.

Here's what I've experienced using Acetone as a brush cleaner, as I'm an artist.

If you are using ANYTHING with acetone, and you have rubber hosing to anything, you will find that over time it will break down the rubber, as it pulls anything remotely resembling an adhesive out of it.

When it comes to my paintbrushes, it literally breaks down anything that isn't organic, and even then, it destroys them.

Now if your gas has ethanol in it, the reason why you'd see a decrease in mileage, is that when mixed with any kind of alcohol, the material bonds to it, causing the materials to spall. Now, if you don't know what spalling is, imagine having atom sized balls of adhesive flying through your engine, and once combusted, leaving a nice sticky residue on everything.

Acetone, is bad news, that or denatured alcohol, if you see idiots saying this will help your mileage, you'd be wise to avoid their idiocy.

So many morons, so few bullets.

I agree.

I used to work with that shit and it's down right nasty. It burns the hell out oj your skin if you spill it on yourself too.

Now if that engine were a Jet Turbine Engine... Then I'd say go for it.

I work with solvents a lot, as an artist, it's part of my job. The shit that acetone does to things that aren't impervious to it, is obscene, and the delicate systems of a car would be toast within 6 months.

So many morons, so few bullets.
