I have to give a report on hidden taxes. I will be doing my own investigating of course but y'all are such a wonderful resource I was hoping you could help me out. I'll be out of town for a few days so forgive me if I don't reply.

FEMA-sponsored "flood" insurance. Portrayed as disaster insurance, but in reality covers nothing for most folks. If you live in a flood plain, or a desert flood channel, or a CA hillside made of loose dirt, you already know what you are up against. But FEMA pushes their crap mainly in places (like my mom's condo in Arlington, MA) where flood is a meaningless concept because the water has been channeled underground. There is no way to get a flood the way they have defined it. But ground level units in the building have flooded in the past from poor groundwater drainage, downspout problems, etc. None of those things are covered, but the building mgt (egged on by FEMA) presents them as bogeymen.

Bottom line: pay 30k for a hydraulic study, or buy worthless "flood" insurance for unknown $$ per year.

Money problems do not come from a lack of money, but from living an excessive, unrealistic lifestyle

Start by looking at your Utility Bills. Note all the governmental charges on the bill - those are all taxes regardless of what they are called.

The goobermunt has become good at hiding them some of the names they are hidden under:

Excise taxes or fees.

Tariffs - which are taxes levied against imported goods.

Special pupose "fees".

The Corporate Income Tax which, where the companies can't find a way to avoid it, is passed on to the consumer so is actually a hidden tax on the buyer. This is one of the most pernicious as it is inevitably sold to the public as an envy tax to "git them greedy awful corporations".

Sin Taxes. The tax on a pound of Bulk rolling tobacco is now 24.86 per pound - for a product that the farmer gets about 2 bucks per pound.

I have heard said, but can't document it, that there are about 32 taxes on a loaf of bread before it hits the shelf.

Agricultural Subsidies - which artificially inflate food prices on favored products by establishing a subsidized minimum price - Corn, Wheat, Peanuts, etc., ....

This is a big area and once you start digging into it the threads run everywhere.
