The bombing of Dresden was an act of utter depravity. Unpardonable. Unforgiveable.

Like the bombing of Hiroshima, the bombing of Dresden served as both revenge and warning to its country. The Nazis had been able to building up Dresden, and make it a hub of the German operations, by telling its populace that Dresden would not and could not be bombed -- in part because an unidentified cousin of Churchill lived there (I am not sure if they were referring to a nephew who was a prisoner at Colditz Prison a very considerable distance away).

The British, who had not forgotten the terror bombings of the London blitz, including the wanton destruction of Coventry, were quite willing to give tit for tat to Dresden. Coming after the German defeats in Stalingrad and the like, this prolonged bombing of Dresden in February 1945, was meant to demonstrate to the German people that their country was losing the war, that their defenses were inadequate, and so forth, to hasten a German surrender.

By focusing on one German city - a city which had been uncommonly prosperous during the War - the Allied attack may have facilitated the avoidance of many more deaths if the German morale had not been lowered.

They killed mostly women and children and old people. There's no excuse for it. Not then, not now. Using Hiroshima as an example doesn't really help your argument either. It's an atrocity.

Have you ever checked into how Germany was treated after the war? A good book to read on the subject is "The Wartime Journals of Charles A. Lindbergh." Lindbergh toured Europe before the war and immediately after. I will just hit the high spots, but he says there was much looting even by American troops and Americans by all reports conducted themselves better than the French or Russians. He quotes an army technician from Stuttgart who said the French troops had indulged in looting, rape and murder. The Black troops operating as part of the French army were far worse. In the French occupied territory, the occupants of every building with their ages had to be posted outside. Then the Senegalese and French soldiers would get drunk at night and go door to door looking for victims to rape. This technician said practically every female between the ages of 6 and 60 in Stuttgart were raped--6,000 cases of rape were reported. Lindbergh said when the American army moved into an occupied village, they took the best houses to stay in and the occupants were ordered out with no thought of where they would stay or what they would eat. They were allowed to take their clothing, some utensils and furniture. Often what the army didn't want in the house, they just chucked out the windows. Lindbergh recounts several times about seeing hungry, wasted children, but says military regulations forbade them to give any food out. Of course, according to Lindbergh the Russian sectors were atrocity city. Among other things they would shoot anyone who tried to make a dash for the American side. He quotes an American commander who said the river bank was filled with bodies, he even saw the body of a girl about the age of seven.

So, stripping away the excuses and justifications, you think mass murder of of civilian populations is a good thing - when it is done by people you approve of.
