Man identified as suicide plane pilot used San Marcos address 18 Feb 2010 A man being identified as the pilot of a plane that crashed into an office building used by Internal Revenue Service in Austin this morning has used San Marcos addresses in the past but the extent of his connections to the city are unclear. The Associated Press is quoting a federal law enforcement official saying a man named Joseph Stack flew his Piper Cherokee plane into the Echelon 1 building on Research Boulevard. Stack posted an apparent suicide note to www.embeddedart.com, since removed from the Internet found here, in which he railed against the IRS and other entities. Stack used a San Marcos address, 925 E Hwy 80, when he registered the domain name in 2003. That address corresponds with the SanMar Plaza retail center that is home to a Dollar General, Hastings and Hobby Lobby.

Two F-16 fighter jets were sent from Houston as a precaution, but federal authorities said preliminary information did not indicate any terrorist connection to the crash.

"We can confirm a small plane hit a building in Austin, Texas that includes IRS offices in Echelon Building I that houses about 190 IRS employs. We are still in process accounting for all employees and will update as information is available, " the IRS said in a statement. The city confirmed the Echelon Building at 9430 Research Blvd. was hit.
