The record for number of golds won by an Olympic host country was 10 held by by Norway (1994) and the U.S. (2002). Canada won the 14th gold today with the men's hockey.
Mostly. That and ice fishing.
And if I recall from the article the record for most Gold's period was 13 - so that makes it a double record.

I wish you could see the all the youtube videos of the celebrating. I was in Edmonton in the early 90s when the Oilers won all those Stanley Cups. The partying downtown was something else. The University was right across the river. 30,000 students. I can just imagine what Vancouver will be like tonight.
My prediction for tomorrow is a run on Pepto Bismol at the local Pharmacy.

Vancouver's Olympic party explodes to life
I think the sign pretty well sums it up. Lots of happy cheering people. The "Home Boys" do'ed good. One of those things - human nature - to support your own group/team and cheer them on and celebrate when they win, commiserate when they lose. No commiserating today - except for the ones who hung it all out and didn't quite pull it off. They're still winners though, because they went for it - no compromise. What was the final score anyway? It got me thinking - I still tear up every time I think of the "miracle on ice" in Lake Placid when a bunch of kids beat the Russians for the Gold.

It got me thinking - I still tear up every time I think of the "miracle on ice" in Lake Placid when a bunch of kids beat the Russians for the Gold. 3-2. It went to overtime. Cool. So it was A game. No dishonor in losing to an inspired team. I still remember the goalie on the Lake Placid team - he was incredible - some of the saves he made were two levels above what he normally played - he was a brick wall. However, it was a team effort.

Yeah, what an incredible show they put on. I remember it, the kids really surpassed everyone's expectations. They may have expected to win but I doubt the odds on them were very good.

I would have to agree. No other sports achievement affects me quite the same way. It was the combination of things - that they were kids and that they were going against lonnnnnng odds - the bloody Russian Team was a Pro team in all but name and had bested some of the NHL's best. So, to rise to that level and play as they did for even one game and to pull off the upset of the century was simply incredible - a miracle on ice.

I still remember the talk before the game about how they were one of the best Olympic Hockey teams the U.S. had ever fielded and yet the Russians were on the level of the NHL and that the best Team USA could hope for was to not be blown out too badly and then win the Silver.
