FLAT ROCK Henderson County Sheriff's deputies on Sunday charged two men with stealing more than 500 spikes from an active railroad track in Flat Rock.
Deputies received a call of suspicious activity on the tracks near Blue Ridge Road and caught Cruz Mario Carnacion, 37, and Jose Luis Trejo-Yanez, 35, collecting spikes, according to a statement from the sheriff's office.
Investigators said the men were in possession of more than 500 spikes, which are about 7 inches long and weigh about a half-pound.
Both were charged with felony conspiracy to damage railroad property, willful injury to railroad property, and trespassing on railroad property.
The men gave no address of residence and deputies believe they are in the country illegally, according to the statement.
They were each placed under a $25,000 dollar bond and ordered held on ICE detainers pending deportation proceedings.
The sheriff's office and Norfolk Southern Police are continuing to investigate.
