Newest tobacco fear reeks of lies

Apparently the secondhand-smoke demons aren't scaring enough people... because in their latest desperate move, the Health Nazis have conjured up a new tobacco monster. They're calling it "thirdhand smoke."

That's right, folks. You can't make this stuff up.

A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences claims that smokers create toxic particles that linger long after their cigarette has been snuffed. The researchers are suggesting that smokers carry a little invisible cloud of these particles around with them wherever they go, kind of like that dust cloud that always follows Charlie Brown's friend Pig-Pen.

In other words, smokers are constantly contaminating everyone, everywhere, all the time with their filthy habit -- whether they're actually smoking around anyone or not.

I'm sure you can see where this is going. More rules, more laws, and less personal freedom -- all in the name of health. And sure enough, the researchers claim that the only solution is 100 percent smoke-free places. And to assure a victory, they're pulling out their ace in the hole: the children.

The scientists claim that since these particles linger on floors, walls and furniture, children who crawl around touching everything are in grave danger. Never mind that they can't present a single child -- not one! -- who's ever been harmed by this supposed health risk.

It's pure bunk designed to scare more people away from the healthy use of tobacco.

Don't believe a word of it. The truth is, smoking can save your life -- and I've got all the science to prove it. LINK

The relationship between morality and liberty is a directly proportional one.

Umm.... what? I was following along just fine till I read that!

I know cigarettes are full of toxic chemicals and are much worse than cigars which are generally pure tobacco, but I've never heard of any "healthy" way to use any tobacco product.

Read the link. He does have a sound rationale and oddly enough science to back it up. I agree about the chemicals in commercially manufactured cigarettes though - which is why I buy high quality bulk tobacco.

They must be putting more chemicals than ever before in it. When I was a kid in the mid-60s, my dad hand-rolled his smokes with Velvet pipe tobacco or PA and I recall the smoke being sweet and not unpleasant at all.

The shit they put in cigarettes today is foul. Acrid, eye-watering, and the stench permeates everything. I live near a major university, and the college kids mostly smoke Marlboro Lights. If I were to venture a guess on the smell of roasting dogshit, that would be it.

I recognize the style of the link as a professional writing sales pitch. Maybe there's something to it, but... buyer beware.

I don't think you would be too far off.

Personally I like Stokebye's "Late Harvest" - American Tobacco imported from Denmark. :-)

That's because the linked article is out of his paid subscription Newsletter - "The Douglas Report" which he wants to sell subscriptions to. However, getting around the pitch the material is interesting. I get his "Free" Newsletter "The Daily Dose" which comes complete with ads and pitches but still contains a lot of good info.

the doctor's point is that pure tobacco without the toxic additives has some health benefits. he suggests cigars. i don't think there's a healthy cigarette though. i remember when my grandfather smoked cigars and pipes. the tobacco he used had a pleasant aroma and never lingered in the house like cigarette tobacco. he lived to be 92. no illnesses. he just wore out.

My grandfather decided to quit smoking cigarettes because he was afraid it might shorten his life - at 85. He must have been right because he remained in relatively good active health all the way up to ten days shy of 100th birthday when he dropped dead from a Kidney infection - not related to age.

I gathered that, and noted that he had no good words for the cigarette companies.

Sure, it's plausible. I already accept that marijuana has health benefits, so tobacco in it's natural form.... sure, it could happen. Plop tobacco in the herbal possibility dept.

Cool. I want to do 100 as well. 120 would be nice as well. I want to be the cantankerous old fart who confounds the ninnies by having my daily cigar at 119.
