I've carried the 1911A1 N.M. since '67. Two have looked at the wrong end, and decided to live.

Jethro Tull;

I, too, am a man who prefers the .45 caliber handgun to any other; however, realistically, for those of us who are older and disabled, either the 9mm or .380 is the weapon of choice. I chose the Kel Tec .380 because it is the lightest gun in its class (8.1 ounces unloaded) and easy to conceal on a person who is small framed, such as myself (I also possess a ccwp).

I fully realize the draw backs of small calibers like the .380, but there is no way I could conceal my Ruger P90DC .45 caliber pistol on my person, let alone lug around its 33 ounces for even one day. Consequently, I practice a lot with the Kel Tec from both a sitting and standing position, Weaver style and point shooting techniques, as well as 'quick draw' procedures from both pocket and inside-the-waist holsters. In all my training sessions, I attempt to achieve a one-shot-one-kill placement with a quick follow up should my first round fail to hit the center of the bull's eye.

As the article noted, any gun is better than no gun when the bad guy comes calling. My issue here is not with the effectiveness of the .45 caliber bullet, but with the necessity of having to carry a smaller caliber handgun due to age and physical handicap. If I had my druthers, I'd pack a .50 caliber machine gun; but that option is no longer practical for me. So, instead, I use a "mouse gun" in caliber .380 and train to hit just left of center of mass in any assailant's body.

My choice of the Kel Tac .380 caliber pistol is ideal considering my age and physical condition. I may have to pull the trigger twice, perhaps even three times to bring down the thug, but it beats bringing a knife to a gun fight. Do I hear an amen?

These are a part of my home alarm system.

The top is a Colt .45 Defender, and is easily carried.

Below is an FN57 which shoots a 5.7x28 round (similar to a .223) and has a 20 round clip.

Between them both, the argument over which is better; a fast moving, light round, or a slower, large round is a non issue.

Given my druthers, I'd use the .45 to knock someone down.
