Click on the 'tube below - Ashokan Farewell - prior to reading.

A week before the battle of Bull Run Sullivan Ballou, a Major in the 2nd
Rhode Island Volunteers, wrote home to his wife in Smithfield.

July 14,1861
Camp Clark, Washington DC

Dear Sarah:

The indications are very strong that we shall move in a few days - perhaps tomorrow. And lest I should not be able to write you again I feel impelled to write a few lines that may fall under your eye when I am no more.

I have no misgivings about, or lack of confidence in the cause in which I am engaged, and my courage does not halt or falter. I know how American Civilization now leans upon the triumph of the government and how great a debt we owe to those who went before us through the blood and suffering of the Revolution. And I am willing - perfectly willing - to lay down all my joys in this life, to help maintain this government, and to pay that debt.

Sarah, my love for you is deathless, it seems to bind me with mighty cables that nothing but omnipotence can break; and yet my love of Country comes over me like a strong wind and bears me irresistibly with all those chains to the battlefield. The memory of all the blissful moments I have enjoyed with you come crowding over me, and I feel most deeply grateful to God and you, that I have enjoyed them for so long. And how hard it is for me to give them up and burn to ashes the hopes and future years, when, God willing, we might still have lived and loved together, and see our boys grown up to honorable manhood around us.

If I do not return, my dear Sarah, never forget how much I loved you, nor that when my last breath escapes me on the battle field, it will whisper your name...

Forgive my many faults, and the many pains I have caused you. How thoughtless, how foolish I have sometimes been!...

But, 0 Sarah, if the dead can come back to this earth and flit unseen around those they love, I shall always be with you, in the brightest day and in the darkest night... always, always. And when the soft breeze fans your cheek, it shall be my breath, or the cool air your throbbing temple, it shall be my spirit passing by.

Sarah do not mourn me dead; think I am gone and wait for me, for we shall meet again...

Sullivan

Sullivan Ballou was killed a week later at the 1st Battle of Bull Run.

Ashokan Farewell is one of the most haunting melodies ever played. Whoever paired it with the Ballou letter was a genius.

Whatever one may think of Ken Burns, Shelby Foote was incredible.

Is it sad or weird that I know who most of the photos were in the first video? Even the obscure one or two generals (Custer and Adm. Farragut)??

I watched every damned minute of that series.

It is one of those interesting anomalies which defy conventional explanation - that often men soon to die in battle will KNOW that their time draws nigh, and will take some action - as a letter or passing on a piece of memorabilia to be given to a loved one.

Materialistic science has no explanation for this in their "man is meat" limited view of existence - and so they ignore it.

Of course there are non-battlefield examples as well - such as those who canceled their berth on the titanic at the last moment and those who in passing betray their thoughts to a loved one or a friend.

There is much more to this entity called "Man" than materialism can explain or cares to explore.

I totally agree. I posted this because PBS here is playing the Ken Burns series now. I own it, yet anytime it's on I have to watch. Haunting is the perfect word for Ashokan Farewell and the way Burns meshed it into the series is unforgettable. When Foote reads the Ballou letter, it sends chills down my spine. It's the most beautiful letter I've ever read or heard.

Damn it...I just have to buy the f'kin thing on DVD. I always miss it.

An aside here, never put off something you intend to do because the clock is ticking. Shelby Foote never delisted his Memphis TN telephone number even after Burns' series gave him a late-in-life fame.

I always intended to call him and tell him how I admired his work and maybe shoot the breeze for a bit, but never mustered up the courage, found the time, etc, and found out a couple years ago that he'd died.

Our PBS station is running some Ed Sullivan/Rock n Roll stuff.

I think that it's great.

(There are some shows on the tellie that I should watch.)

Custer was in there twice, at least, and Matthew Brady, perhaps even McLellan.

I'm annoyed with myself that I don't recognize the battlefields where all the corpses are lined up...of course, I guess in that conflict, it was pretty much "pick one."

We do exceedingly well at killing our brothers.

I failed in finding the Forrest Gump scene where it showed all Lt. Dan's forebearers dying in all of our wars (and he was indoctrinated enough, to want to die with them).

With Satan running the place until God only knows when, I believe that we will have perpetual war in one form or another all over the earth.

Yes, that was the sense I got. He KNEW his time was near and needed to pour out his heart to she whom he loved. Sweetly sad.

Shelby Foote became known as the "soul" of the project.

No higher tribute could have been paid.

Here's a guy who hung out w/ William Faulkner and had pretty much reached his high water mark years before, living out his life in comparatively unbothered retirement when Ken Burns came along. Yes, he was well known because of the three volume set on the war (and he apparently had a love/hate issue with the fact that it defined his entire life's work).

That voice was magnificent and he was a natural storyteller. That molasses- slow drawl and the reflective pauses to light his pipe or tug on his beard gave the listener the aspect that he wasn't so much telling a story as relating an old memory, and he told them in such a way that the listener almost would swear it was their own memory instead of something that happened a century and a half ago.

One interview I saw had him calling Ken Burns and telling him "Ken, you've made me a millionayuh.."

Burns may have had Foote in mind all along, but I like to think it was one of those happy accidents like Lee Ermey in Full Metal Jacket.

It was indeed, the right man at the right time.

It took Burns longer to put the project together than it took to fight the bloody war.

What effing cause? Was it worth over half a million deaths? To prevent independence for a half of a country who resent being robbed for the effing Yankees?
