Just 13% Say It’s Illegal Not To Answer Census Questions
Monday, March 15, 2010

As 120 million U.S. Census forms begin to arrive in mailboxes around the country, only 13% of Americans realize that it is illegal not to answer all of the Census questions.

A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that 57% of adults think - incorrectly - that it is not against the law to not answer all the questions on the Census. Another 30% are not sure.

Fifty-three percent (53%) of adults say the Census simply counts the number of people in the United States along with gathering some basic information. However, 22% believe the Census asks detailed personal questions. One-in-four Americans (25%) are not sure which it does.

Seventy-six percent (76%) say they have received notices in the mail about participating in the Census. Twenty-two percent (22%) have not.

Seventy-four percent (74%) say they have seen TV commercials about participating in the Census, and only 20% say they have not seen any such ads. The Census Bureau spent $2.5 million on ads that ran during the Super Bowl. Before the kickoff, 62% expected to watch that game.

Men are slightly more likely than women to know it is illegal not to answer Census questions. Adults 18 to 29 are more inclined to think that than those who are older.

Republicans are twice as likely as Democrats to say it is illegal not to answer the entire Census. Adults not affiliated with either major party are the least likely to think that.

Twenty-one percent (21%) of government employees say it is illegal not to answer all the Census questions, compared to 10% of those who work in the private sector.

Men think the Census seeks more detailed private information than women do. Higher-income Americans also tend to believe the Census is looking for more than just a headcount of the American population and some basic information.

Sixty-one percent (61%) of adults say they have followed recent news stories about the Census at least somewhat closely. Thirty-four percent (34%) aren’t following news about the Census closely, if at all.

Some of the suspicion about the Census is likely being fed by the high level of unhappiness with the government’s actions these days.

Seventy-one percent (71%) of voters nationwide say they’re at least somewhat angry about the current policies of the federal government. That figure includes 46% who are Very Angry.

Just 21% of voters believe that the federal government enjoys the consent of the governed.

A lot of things were "brushed from" our culture and language that are about to make another appearance.

You're right and that's why even like minded folks clash over language. What a 60 year old thinks is non offensive, hits a younger person the wrong way thanks to them being bathed in a more PC culture.

I understand they ask people if they are Negro.

I don't know, I didn't look at it that close. They seemed to dwell on hispanic though.

To me, the best answer on the ethnicity question suggested on this forum, is to check other, and then write American.

Of course, that might generate a clip-board visit, but so what? It's a true and correct answer.

Like I said, do what you want. Save the country by not letting the government know how many people you are, or what color you are.

As for me, I'm not going to give them a reason to arrest me or keep a warrant in their back pocket because I don't want them to know how many people me and my wife are. They already know that, it was printed right on my 1040 forms that came in January.

...highly questioning whether you work for the Feds at this point as a plant...

We got our second Census Letter today. On the front in BIG letters it says "Your Response Is Required By Law".

Now, I'm not sure whose law, or what law they mean, but unless we're Mirandized, they aren't getting more than the enumeration. They're not even getting our names.

I'm looking at this and asking myself, since when is this really America?

Just opened it. We apparently got the non-speculum version. However, it has a few interesting things about it. They want names, ages, and and a phone number. The one thing that I find most interesting, is their focus on race. The Hispanic thing is all over it. They want to know what country of origin the Hispanic Communities are from.

To me, this form is an intrusion into my privacy. It's an intrusion past the question of how many people live in this house. What bothers me the most about this deal, is why it is so important to gather up all this information.

Then, I got to thinking. This information will likely be handed over to police agencies, and SOLD to credit agencies. They will also use it to figure out which areas need a Hispanic Traitor/Politician to represent them.

It says in big bold letters, that I must comply. What I'm trying to figure out is to what extent do I comply?

I don't see what the point would be. They could derive far more information from your driver's license or 1040 forms.

I guess I don't see the point of all the hispanic junk either. The 30-50 million Wetbaxicans won't be answering the census anyway.

It looks like this thing is just another monumental waste of taxpayer money to me.

Edit: The thing that really bugs me is that GPS bullshit they did. With O'boingo's predilection for using those damned Preditor drones, I worry about a missile coming through my front door.

I got mine today an already have it filled out. Although I must admit I got the shorter and much less intrusive basic form. I don't know what I would have done had I gotten the longer and much more intrusive Long Form. Probably answered while making my answers as hard to decipher as possible.

LOL! Concur.

I think the long form is more aimed at developing a profile "all the better to control you with my dear".

Esso's point here is that this is information that that the feds can get anywhere anyway, so why take a stand on this minor hill possibly setting yourself up for hassle.

I'm going to fill out the # of people in our house and that's it.

Just for laughs, force the census taker to perform an oral interview.

Then, everytime they ask you a personal question, tell them you will answer the question if they first answer the same question put to them.

Record everything they might say on a notepad.

If they refuse to answer, tell them to come back when they are prepared to reciprocate with answers to the same personal questions.
