Title: Revealed: Ashcroft, Tenet, Rumsfeld warned 9/11 Commission about ‘line’ it ’should not cross’

Senior Bush administration officials sternly cautioned the 9/11 Commission against probing too deeply into the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, according to a document recently obtained by the ACLU.

The notification came in a letter dated January 6, 2004, addressed by Attorney General John Ashcroft, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and CIA Director George J. Tenet. The ACLU described it as a fax sent by David Addington, then-counsel to former vice president Dick Cheney.

In the message, the officials denied the bipartisan commission's request to question terrorist detainees, informing its two senior-most members that doing so would "cross" a "line" and obstruct the administration's ability to protect the nation.

"In response to the Commission's expansive requests for access to secrets, the executive branch has provided such access in full cooperation," the letter read. "There is, however, a line that the Commission should not cross -- the line separating the Commission's proper inquiry into the September 11, 2001 attacks from interference with the Government's ability to safeguard the national security, including protection of Americans from future terrorist attacks."

The 9/11 Commission, officially called the National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States, was formed by President Bush in November of 2002 "to prepare a full and complete account of the circumstances surrounding the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks" and to offer recommendations for preventing future attacks.

"The Commission staff's proposed participation in questioning of detainees would cross that line," the letter continued. "As the officers of the United States responsible for the law enforcement, defense and intelligence functions of the Government, we urge your Commission not to further pursue the proposed request to participate in the questioning of detainees."

FireDogLake's Marcy Wheeler speculates that this was an attempt by the Bush administration to ensure that its torture of certain detainees, which has since been widely documented, remained secret.

"[W]hoever made these annotations appears to have been most worried that Commission staff members could make independent judgments about the detainees and the interrogations," Wheeler wrote on her blog. The official "didn't want anyone to independently evaluate the interrogations conducted in the torture program."

Eventually, the commission's co-chairs harshly criticized the administration for having purportedly "destroyed" tapes of its interrogations with terror suspects, as Raw Story reported last year.

9/11 Commission members Thomas Kean and Lee H. Hamilton wrote that although US President George W. Bush had ordered all executive branch agencies to cooperate with the probe, "recent revelations that the CIA destroyed videotaped interrogations of Qaeda operatives leads us to conclude that the agency failed to respond to our lawful requests for information about the 9/11 plot."

"Those who knew about those videotapes — and did not tell us about them — obstructed our investigation."

They continued: “There could have been absolutely no doubt in the mind of anyone at the CIA — or the White House — of the commission’s interest in any and all information related to Qaeda detainees involved in the 9/11 plot.

"Yet no one in the administration ever told the commission of the existence of videotapes of detainee interrogations," Kean and Hamilton wrote.

The letter can be found on page 26 of the ACLU's set of unveiled documents.

The ACLU forgot to mention obvious high-level obstructions, such as the destruction of criminal evidence at ground zero and the high command orders to destroy or sequester such criminal evidence.

ACLU whining about access to torture tapes is public theatre.

ACLU are the same clowns that defend hate speech criminalization.

You don't honestly think that that's going to appear anywhere prompted by the FedGov, do you

It will never see the light of day if the ACLU is doing the prompting.

To my memory, no one appointed to the "dog and pony show" resigned in protest.

To my memory, no one appointed to the "dog and pony show" resigned in protest.

Max Cleland resigned from the 9-11 commission and called it a hoax.

He later took a position with the international bankers if memory serves correctly.

FROM WIKI: Cleland was originally appointed to serve on the 9/11 Commission but resigned shortly after, having been appointed to the Board of directors of the Export-Import Bank of the United States. Prior to his resignation, he claimed that the Bush administration was "stonewalling" and blocking the committee's access to key documents and witnesses.[12]

The World is being held hostage by an international terrorist organization best described as INTERNATIONAL (JEWISH) BANKERS. Their willing accomplices in government and media should swing from the rope just like the banking elites.

I'm sure there'll be enough rope laying around to accomodate these folks when the truth surfaces.

how much longer does a war w/o cause have to continue as we wipe out innocent civilians before neocons begin taking their brains out of their asses and start being honest with themselves and begin asking the tough questions.

Answer: As long as possible.

Their gray matter is permanently wired to their assholes, and honesty is considered personality defect in those circles. Success is measured by the body count.

I see psyops everywhere.

To my memory, no one appointed to the "dog and pony show" resigned in protest.

Actually if memory serves one very quietly, with little public fanfare, exited, and another refused to sign off on the final report. Since then members of the commission, including the Chairman, have come forward with "mea culpas" saying that they were lied to in order to cover their ass. That would seem to indicate that they are not sure the cover-up will hold.

The real reason for the Bush Obstruction of Justice was to prevent the Commission from encountering evidence that the events did not take place as the official Fairy Tale/Conspiracy Theory stated. That also is why Bush initially tried to appoint "Henry the 'K"" as chairman so that it could be thoroughly obstructed from within. Of course the stink over that forced him to appoint another shill.

At this point the question in my mind is not will it eventually unravel, I am convinced it will - too many know it stinks, but whether it will happen before Duhbya and fiends die of old age and escape their just rewards? Personally I want to see them get a fair trial - and then duly hung in accord with all legal proceedings. Most just of course would be to put them in a controlled demolition so they can watch the building come down around them like the people they murdered.

Unfortunately that IS true. We are dealing with some very sick people. Probably Duhbya's great regret is that he wasn't able to top Stalin.

With the media blockade and their blathering propaganda about anyone not believing the government lies as despicable it is an up hill battle. However, at least one poll found that somewhere around 3/4 of the American People do not think we have been given the truth. Having said that the major media is hemorrhaging viewers/readers to the point where they have been forced to drop their ad rates. Both are positive indicators. There are simply too many flaws and inconsistencies - and outright contradictory facts countering the "Official Conspiracy Theory®" for them to hold the lid on forever. Now whether we will see any action on it in the short term is questionable. It may well end up, as with the Kennedy Hit, that the prime malefactors will pass on to the silence of the grave before the full truth gets out, but they have so far been unable to silence the Internet.

Just on a systemic basis, and having a knowledge of history helps, the U.S. is now in an advanced state of decay. The world system as set up by the Rotchilds is in an advanced state of decay. Psychotics are incapable of building anything - all they are capable of doing is to destroy. That being a given they are very busy on this society. As things stand it will not last another 20 years before there is major worldwide collapse and probably sooner. However uncertain the future may be I do see positive elements and so the Phoenix may rise from the ashes born anew. Ever I remain an optimist - in the LONG run.
