A Delaware man who had been indicted on charges of rape and gross sexual imposition against a child fatally shot himself Friday night after officers arrived to arrest him, officials said.
Zewar R. Ali-Dib, 28, of 246 Silver Maple Dr., was found dead in his apartment, according to news releases from Delaware city police and county deputy sheriffs.
Earlier Friday, a Delaware County grand jury indicted Ali-Dib on one count of rape and five counts of gross sexual imposition, Sheriff Walter L. Davis III said.
Officers arrived with an arrest warrant about 9:20 p.m. After knocking on the door, they saw someone peek out a front window and then heard a woman inside scream, police said. Jennifer N. Britton, 27, ran out the front door. Officers heard two shots, pulled Britton away from the building and started evacuating nearby apartments, police said.
The Delaware County Tactical Unit and Negotiators Unit moved in shortly after midnight after officers received no response from Ali-Dib. He was found dead in an upstairs bathroom with two gunshot wounds to the head. A gun was found nearby, police said.
Ali-Dib's relationship to Britton was unclear.
The indictment filed Friday in Delaware County charged Ali-Dib with one count of rape and five counts of gross sexual imposition involving a girl younger than 13. The incidents all occurred between Jan. 1, 2008, and March 2 of this year, court records show.
A Delaware County law-enforcement source said that Ali-Dib had confessed to the crimes.
