No More Money, Mexico Got It All

Oh, please, you probably spent $56.34 for your trip.....

I was going to say I'll never know how much the whole thing cost, but just now realized I can nail it very closely, because of your comment.

For the first time (been Mexico traveling for sixteen years) we took nearly no USD's, and used ATM's, like most people have gotten around to doing. So by going online, I will be able to see pretty exactly how much I depleted the account.

Did spend a lot more than Sue and I would have normally, but we were entertaining my Cousin for nine days (he only eats at fancy places, three times a day) and the two friends came down for another ten days or so, and it made for more fun and more expense.

It became obvious that one could live quite well for very little in Colima, Ixtlahuacan, Ajijic, Chapala and esp. Guadalahara, as prices were so compeative there.

For instance in Tlaxquepacque we had the greatest drink for eight pesos,$0.64.

It was thick and green, made of blended and strained cilantro, celery and pineapple. An amazing blend, I recommended all try it at home, as we will be.

So this trip we spent $$ pretty freely, as I may have been a bit too tight in the past, so offhand, not including plane fare, which was about seven hundred, I guess we blew about $3000, or somewhere around $95USD/day.

In a way, less, as we had our son have a root canal done here for $200 USD and a gold crown for $560, and Sue and I had two most excellent teeth cleanings for $24 USD each, (not included in the above costs) so you could realistically deduct from the cost of the trip the $1000 or so price differential of doing this in the US. Puts it about at about $64USD/day.

Our cheapest hotel room was in Colima, and was just fine, cost $220 MP, or $20USD. Most expensive was $700MP, $56, but was at a friqqing palace off the main historical plaza in Guadlahara with a rose filled balcony over the main calle.

The hotel in Ajijic was $600 ($48 USD) but came to become a ranch in Ixtlahuacan with a Chevy Blazer included, so that was a super deal, as we had a real National Geographic exploration experience visiting Canada, an end of the dirt road village having a festival.

Tequlia, beer, tripe stew and and bunch of fried up cow noses, or something similar was all part of it.

There were problems, natch, but it was a fairly great vacation for a reasonable amount of dough.

Sue and I both commented on how inexpensively Mexico could be done if you knew just some of the tricks, but that is not always easy.

For example yesterday afternoon when our five star bus arrived in Vallarta from GUD, we were tempted to take a taxi, for $26USD, to the old city, where we know the hotels.

Instead, we solidered out to the feeder road, five minute walk, not pleasent when wheeling our baggage through the road, but in a few minutes here comes the village idiot bus that we got on for $1.30. Took a bit longer than the taxi, but we saw an interesting part of the city. Made getting the nice shrimp diablo dinner that night just a little more enjoyable. Hard to believe that last night Sue and I were sipping Bloody Ceasars on the warm shores of Bahia de Banderas. For 2.80 each, and the white table service was excellent as was the salsa and tapitios (chips). Well. gotta go fill the snowblower with gas.

Well after snorkling all day in the coral reef off Tenacatita Bay, when we went to have dinner at the seafood restaurant on the beach I got bit by a bunch of sand fleas.

I've been all over the U.S. by being a gigolo, like Deuce Bigelow. I've had to do some awful ugly women, though.

No I don't, but we're going to the market today to see if we can replicate it.

No doubt it was the healthyst thing we ate there.

More so than the fermented Pomigranite juice spiked with Tequlia, I am sure.

I don't know the name of the one Tom was talking about but I can tell you the name of a really good drink (not claiming it is healthy/healthful and you sure wouldn't want to drink many of them at one sitting). They are called caipirinhas and they are the national cocktail of Brazil.

http://www.maria-brazil.org/caipirinha.htm

I understand you have a Fogo De Chao (fo-go dèe shoun) restaurant there where you live. It is an experience about as close to heaven as you will get this side of the grave to eat at a good Brazilian Churrascaria. They are much more expensive in the states than in Brazil and maybe you would like to go for a special occasion or something but I think everyone should go to one at least once.

Thanks for the heads up. I know there are several Brazilian restaurants in Vallarta, I may search one out to see if they offer this.

Hard to imagine a Brazilian restaurant that doesn't have caipirinhas. If cachaca (pinga) is not available you can use vodka to make them (it is then called a caipiroshka). And if you have neither of those you can use white rum and you will have a caipiríssima.

Thank you. Nice of you to say so.

If you like wine and can find it (not easy) my favorite is Copper Ridge Cellars White Zinfandel.
