All is Vanity See other All is Vanity Articles Title: About Men If you will forgive my generalizations, I’d like to have a conversation about men. I find men to be wonderful creatures. Ingenious and creative, they never cease to fascinate me. Since the advent of the nature v nurture argument, there has been this push to make men more like women. They are urged to “get in touch” with their feelings, to think before they speak and to be kind and gentle towards all. This is especially true in the school system. Sadly this denies them everything that makes them men and you boys don’t even have the serotonin levels necessary for such behavior. And who says men aren’t in touch with their feelings anyway? Men are expected to treat everyone as equals when it is the nature of a man to develop a pecking order. Equality must be proven and earned. A mother is nurturing if she kisses away the tears and tells her son it will be all right but a man is not nurturing when he tells his son to shake it off, take it like a man. Why? The father is teaching his son the rules for being a man, teaching him how to establish his place in the pecking order. How is teaching the boy how to be a man not nurturing? Because it is not the way a female would do it? Men tend to be visual. Their ability to visualize makes them great engineers. They can see ways of making things easier. They don’t just create the screw driver but they make it magnetic to hold the screw. Poor example but you know what I mean. This visual nature is denied them when it comes to their sexuality. To enjoy viewing women is to turn them into objects and not allowed. To see the beauty in art is to appreciate it but to see the beauty in women is debasement. Go figure. Men don’t do the touchy feely stuff women view as romantic. In her view he must prove his love by buying expensive jewelry and it must be something she likes or it is assumed no thought was involved. Men are problem solvers. He is more likely to show his love and appreciation by putting a lever door handle on the door you routinely use with your hands full. Then he is dismayed when his thoughtfulness goes unappreciated. Too bad because it sure makes it easier to open that door with a full laundry basket. The more I learn about men, the more I admire them for what they are. Heaven help us if we succeed in turning them into female clones. Our very survival depends on them remaining men.
