The Library of Congress' project to archive Twitter was a nod to the significance of the social networking site that gave voice to imprisoned journalists in Egypt and fueled a rallying cry for users to donate money for relief efforts in Haiti.

It also will memorialize a mountain of information on the mundane, from burned breakfast bagels to delays on Metro's Red Line.

Internet scholars say those everyday recordings are useful to researchers, who will comb through the 50 million messages -- known as tweets -- spouted each day to provide a snapshot of our culture, in real time.

"We've been seeing in the past decades the rise of new scholarly disciplines that look at social history . . . that pay attention to everyday people and their everyday lives," said Lee Rainey, director of the Pew Research Center's Internet and American Life Project. "We find ourselves lucky to find the bones of people who are a couple thousand years old so that we can find out about nutrition habits, so I have every reason to suspect this kind of material will tell interesting stories of the state of our culture at this moment."

Internet scholars? Is that how the SPLC refers to themselves now?

good one.

btw, the Library of Congress should change its name to Library of the Executor. Clinton signed an Executive Order to bring it under the Executive branch.

Oh well, the 4th amendment was part of the constitution, which as we all know is now officially defunct, so I guess objecting to the government collecting data about people's day to day conversations from a private network are futile.

On the other hand, it's a grand opportunity to turn 20-somethings off to government, or at least set their feet on that path.

I've been seeing in the past decades a massive intrusion of the federal government into the lives of the average citizen.......far too much attention on everday people and everyday lives at taxpayer expense!!

This is outrageous........another reason why I NEVER tweet.

"The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. ... We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of." Edward Bernays, Father of Public Relations

What I have noticed is that so many intrusions into our privacy can be utterly circumnavigated by unhooking from the Borgish networks. It sucks to have to do that, without question, because it removes our basic freedom to choose how to peacefully conduct our lives. On the other hand, unhooking from the Borg can be quite exhilarating and open up all kinds of doors that seemed to be closed due to our over-technological bound lives.

Think about it.

Stop using credit cards and revert back to cash means no "trail" to follow.

Stop keeping money in a bank (outside of the minimum to pay bills) means no "trail" to follow or look up.

Dealing in cash for most transactions means no "trail" to look up or follow.

Not using "loyalty cards", same.

Not writing our lives out on Facebook for the world to see = instant 100% more privacy when it comes to government and employers.

Not using Twitter (what is the appeal to that idiocy anyway? I don't get it), mean the government won't be recording your every private conversation.

Shit-a-doodle-dandy, you can get a lot of privacy just from those few things, and there's a whole mess more you can do as well. While you can't stop some things, you can probably stop volunteering to give them the information for free, ya' know?

Or plan to?

Years ago I did. We all went to Rockaway Beach, Queens, and spent the weekend doing all sorts of intellectual things :P
