-- I hate television. I only see it when visiting friends who leave it on when other visit. I also have had strong disdain for reality shows like American Idol, and have no real familiarity with it's history except in passingly noting when it is covered in a scan of Google news. However, this woman, Crystal Bowersox has genuine star quality. I have not had an artist move this sometimes overly serious cynic for a long, long, long time. This video is of this week's performance by her. Watch your back, Lady Gaga; someone who does not need gimmicks and controversy to make an impact and the big bucks is going to make you look like a Yugo when she roars past you. She will be the first season winner to become a cultural icon.

Not bad but she can't touch Susan Boyle and her version of I Dreamed A Dream from Les Miserables.

I agree. I saw a short clip of this early this morning on tv, and she brought me to tears...just watched the whole thing, and she did it to me again.

Mike, Critter said she couldn't understand the words, and I didn't catch them all either, so I did a quick search...found this at examiner.com [written by a Christian]: "Crystal Bowersox Making a Difference Crystal Bowersox could easily be voted 'Most Likely to Win" this year's season of American Idol. Ryan Seacrest who hosts the show, mentioned that not long ago Crystal was thinking of leaving the show because 'what's the point?' Exactly. In the overall scheme of things, what is the point? It seems Miss Bowersox has dug deep and come up with the answer. If it's possible, make a difference. Make a real difference. Don't just sing another song. Don't just impress the judges, or win the crowd. When given a platform, and a golden opportunity, make the most of it. Last week was Elvis week. Crystal could have chosen any song from his repertoire. She chose a song entitled "I'm Saved." Here are some of the lyrics: I was a poor lost lamb in a deep dark hole Ah-haha That's why I'm saved I'm saved This week American Idol contestants were told to chose a song by any artist as long as it was "Inspirational." Crystal chose a song entitled "People Get Ready." Although another Crystal by the name of Crystal Lewis (whom I had the pleasure of promoting on her 'Gold' tour with Avalon, here in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area) sang a contemporary Christian song entitled 'People Get Ready', Crystal Bowersox chose a different "People Get Ready" sung by Curtis Mayfield and The Impressions. Here are those lyrics: People get ready People get ready There ain't no room So people get ready Crystal finished the song with tears which she attributed to her family, especially her father who came to watch her for the first time. She was so happy, so moved, so thankful to God, that she could scarcely keep her perfect composure - which was actually the perfect thing to do. Thank you Crystal Bowersox for releasing your emotion, for not being afraid to be vulnearable, for keeping God and family first and foremost in your heart, and for embracing your faith which will last long after American Idol is over. Stand strong and make your earthly father, and your heavenly father, proud of all you do." =========== whew....imo, couldn't be more appropriate for the times.

Mama Sox obviously connected with "people get ready" on a far deeper level than her competition, and this was shown by the degree of belief in the genuineness off her performance by the studio audience. The buzz in the new is now speculation whether this was the best American Idol performance ever, and someone who does that has a gift rarer than merely being a good singer. She has communication and personality gifts that will take her a long way in not only her vocation, but will ensconce her into the role of a cultural icon of our this era and even American culture. I am not an entertainment buff, but I am well schooled in politics, sociology and culture, and I know someone special when I see them. I found her performance compelling and profoundly moving, and I'm not in any way Christian. I know that I like performers like Tory Amos, and I always recognized her as a niche audience performer, and I predicted Bob Marley would be a cultural icon that would forever change the music world. And I was right, whether you like his music or not. He has become iconic and a cultural and musical reference point. Mama Sox is going to go as far a she wants to go. She galvanizes and moves people in ways few do. I find that an easy call to make, and I have no fear of being wrong in my prognostication about her. I don't know exactly what I see in her that makes me so sure she's going places, but I know it is there when I see it. She is the real thing.
