About 15 years ago I was standing in front of the apartment one of my employees lived in, waiting for him, when I saw one cat chasing another across the street. They began to fight in front of a storm drain, and after about two seconds one fell in. The other ran off.

These drains had the fifty-pound circular iron cover on top of them. I got a crowbar out of my car trunk and pulled the cover up and off to one side. About 12 feet down, at the bottom of a vertical tunnel lined with ancient brick, and in about six inches of water, along with cans and some Styrofoam, was a wet cat, looking up at me.

Now how was I supposed to get this cat out? If I didn’t, he was dead. I looked in my trunk again, and saw I had a big tangle of electrical wire. I lowered it into the drain, and darn if the cat didn’t understand and grab with his claws onto the tangle.

It’s amazing how heavy a wet cat is.

I pulled him up, and as he cleared the top, he tried to jump to the pavement, didn’t make it, and fell right back into the drain again. So I lowered the wire again, and started pulling him up,

As he came up, I noticed his eyes were bulging out of his head. He hadn’t grabbed onto the wire this time. A loop of wire was around his neck, and I was slowly strangling him as he came up. When I got him to the top, I got the wire off of his neck, and in about a nanosecond he took off like a shot.

These days, most of the drain openings have grates over them. I’ve seen openings big enough for a kid to fall in, and I’m sure it has happened more than once in the past. Either that, or Pennywise got them.

Ungrateful cat. Stupid, too. He would have been safe the first time he had just waited a few seconds more.

I prefer dogs.

awwwww...poor thing. how was it supposed to know you were trying to save its life at that point? it was survival for it, not stupidity or ungratefulness.

I can tell you a story about a cat, one that came and "took up" at our house. I never had any issue or problem with him but had noticed he was "sneaky." He bit my little niece and my mom on their ankles. Not hard enough to really hurt, don't think he brought blood on either one, but he would always run and look back, indicating that he knew he had done something he shouldn't have. I fed him and petted him sometimes, although I never carried him around and made a fuss over him (and good thing I didn't since I have discovered in the past couple of years that I am allergic to them). But I could reach down and pet him when I fed him (or any time) and pick him up and put him on the rail around the deck and he never tried to bite me. Then one day out of the blue he grabbed onto my forearm with his claws, brought my hand down to his mouth, and clamped down on me. And I mean he really bit me hard! And then he ran like a quarterback being chased by a 300-pound linebacker. And a good thing he did too because if he had stood still I would have kicked a field goal with him. I never again petted him but I still fed him until he disappeared. Then one day my neighbor asked me if I had seen my cat and I told him I didn't have any cat but if he meant the one that had taken up there that I hadn't seen him in a while. And he said, "Don't be looking for him. I passed by Dog's house and he was laying in there. I thought he was asleep until the next time I passed and he was starting to smell bad."

Liberty is not a means to a higher political end. It is itself the highest political end.

I can take or leave cats. They're a female thing, and any woman with more than one cat needs a relaionship with a man and is definitely not getting boinked enough.

I prefer dogs, especially pugs.
