Teen gets 40 years in prison for 'cold-blooded' murder of US Border Patrol agent in California

SAN DIEGO - A 17-year-old Mexican was sentenced to 40 years in prison Thursday for murdering a U.S. Border Patrol agent who was lured from his vehicle during an attempted robbery and shot repeatedly in the head.

Defendant Christian Daniel Castro Alvarez, described as a one-time smuggler of illegal immigrants, sat with his head down throughout the hearing, as the wife and sisters of 30-year-old Robert Rosas emotionally described how his execution shattered their lives.

Castro wrote a letter, read in court by the judge, saying he was "extremely sorry" and wished he could turn back the clock.

The sentencing came as a tough, new law in Arizona thrust illegal immigration back into the national spotlight. The law requires local and state law enforcement officers to question people about their immigration status if there's reason to suspect they're in the country illegally.

U.S. District Judge M. James Lorenz said the "cold-blooded killing" of Rosas changed the dynamics along the U.S.-Mexico border by making agents more fearful for their safety.

"Agents now have to question if they will be ambushed," he said.

Alluding to the robbery attempt, Lorenz said Border Patrol agents must now worry about being attacked "over night-vision goggles or some other ridiculous thing."

Uniformed Border Patrol agents and family members of Rosas in the packed courtroom burst into applause after the judge announced the sentence.

The circumstances of the killing were not entirely clear.

Rosas was shot eight times in the head, neck and torso while on solo patrol the night of July 23, 2009 in a rugged, remote mountainous area near Campo, about 60 miles east of San Diego. He was shot repeatedly from behind.

His body was found with his wallet less than 100 yards from the border. His vehicle was nearby with the engine running and headlights on.

It's past time to put an Illegal Alien stamp on our hunting permits.

I really don't want to cap those people.

It's the .gov traitors that do not enforce our border laws and regulations that hack me off.

They are the treasonous, traitors who should be brought to justice.

Here's a great solution to our problem with crimes like this.

Whenever you have some piece of shit teenager criminal, who's murdered someone in cold blood like this Border Agent, you do the following.

Bring his mom and dad up from Mexico for the trial.

When the trial is over, and the kid is found guilty, Immediately execute the parents in front of the child. When he's seen the kind of emotional damage he's done, then kill him too.

This should be standard procedure for ALL criminals, no matter where they're from. I think it would make parents raise their children better.

I have a better idea. Do what the Japanese do. Have the parents pay for execution of their murderous son.

What happened to capitol punishment? He should see Jesus not a 40 year party in as state prison.

Yes, 40x40K/yr is wasteful.

An inflated round cost of fifty cents would better serve everyone.

He wantonly murdered a man. If the issue was self defense, it would be another story; but the crime is also heinous.

I don't understand state laws wherein there is an attempt by government to be a "nice" benevolent overseer while simultaneously subjecting the citizenry to millions of dollars in perpetual funding for a cold-blooded murderer.

Buck - I no longer get it either.

I've long advocated for floating prisons where the perps could be housed, fed, and yes, even entertained for $400/week, or less, on a huge cruise ship/prison.

Thanks. Violence is not a good answer to this sorry state of affairs.

And, IMO, you are correct, the genesis of the problem was the agricultural lobby that wanted the importation of cheap labor, which wasn't really cheap in the long run.

I did a small analysis of the crop picking wage economics a few years ago. Paying a decent wage for the laborers who produce the food we must have, might amount to a hundred bucks a year, at the very most, prolly $40, to an average family. I believe something like an additional 8 cents a head of lettuce was the case.

There is something deeply wrong in the US system of agricultural production - especially if it depends on essentially on slave labor from another nation. Not to mention a bunch of US teens with colored hair might learn a few good things from working in the fields of Arizona for a few seasons.

Our southern frontier is no place for "agents" or "police."

It's rightfully the place for an army and should be patrolled by one.

I see psyops everywhere.

Were it up to me, I'd build something like the Great Wall of China that was physically impenetrable, with controlled check points for vehicles of commerce, and then try and sort out the 20-30M illegals here.

Most of these people are decent, hard-working individuals supporting families both here and in other countries. I wish them no harm.

But there is a segment of illegals, the gangs, dealers, traffickers, murderers, etc. who should be deported immediately. Not imprisoned here, but sent back to their country of origin, never again to return here.

And the anchor-baby bs would be done away with tomorrow.

Take it from me, vast sections of the US MEX border is exactly that,Great Wall of China - no one, except an extinct Apache warrior, is crossing vast vast sections of the US MEX border.

So the whole big wall concept is just stupid. And I say this with authority cause I have seen the terrain and the remoteness of most of the region.

If the US wants to build a wall to accomplish this purpose a hundred miles would suffice - along the populated areas of the border. I do not personally think the wall is a useful idea.

Build your wall. Then make a video game of it. We could put some guns that are controlled by computer or maybe your XBOX360. Then the kids could move the guns around and look for people to shoot that are getting to close to the fence. You could even charge people to play the game.

Tom people have crossed the ocean hundreds of years ago. Without a fence they will still cross.

There is a danger though. That the wall that was for keeping illegals out will be turned against us to keep us in.

Well, since that's the way we going with warfare, why not?

The per minute charge to play should make it one of the only self-funding ventures that .gov has going on.

Good thinking.

Tom -

The only fences that I've ever seen pictures of couldn't keep a crippled cow from crossing...broken down barbed-wire with sand drifts half-way up to the top.

We have no secure borders, and that's by design.

(As you well know.)

So you are saying that it is impossible for them to cross at those remote places. Have you ever heard of a jeep or an ATV?

Well yes I have heard of a jeep - seeming I owned a Jeep Wagoneer, highly modified for Mexican exploration for a decade or so. And spent fifteen thousand miles driving acrossing the US Mexican borders many times and going into far off into the regions of Parral, Creel, Copper Canyon, Obregeon, the Serria Madria and muchas mas.

"If you think some amount of people are going to cross the border in the remote areas on an ATV............" This is just laughable.

You are wrong. Very Very Wrong. The reason I am so sure of this is because I have actually been to these regions. The illeagals passing is at a few pretty well known places, not in the middle of no where of the US MEX border, you are simply incorrect. I am not trying to start a fight here, but the bulk of illeagals just DO NOT cross at remote sections of the US MEX border.

The illeagals cross at the same places where roads are and food and resturaents are - go figure?

The notion that Mexicans are crossing the remote sections of the border is simply nonsense.

Sure maybe a few are, and I do mean a few.

Like ten. It just dosen't happen.
