NEW YORK – Police investigating a terror attack that could have set off a deadly fireball in Times Square focused Sunday on finding a man who was videotaped shedding his shirt near the SUV where the bomb was found.

Police said the gasoline-and-propane bomb was crude but could have sprayed shrapnel and metal parts with enough force to kill pedestrians and knock out windows on one of America's busiest streets, full of Broadway theaters and restaurants on a Saturday night.

More than 100 pounds of fertilizer rigged with wires and fireworks were found with the bomb, but police said it was not the ammonium nitrate grade that can explode.

The surveillance video shows an unidentified white man in his 40s slipping down an alley and taking off a shirt, revealing another underneath. In the same clip, he's seen looking back in the direction of the smoking vehicle and furtively putting the first shirt in a bag, Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said.

The homemade bomb was made largely with ordinary items including three barbecue grill-sized propane tanks, two 5-gallon gasoline containers, store-bought fireworks and cheap alarm clocks attached to wires.

"The intent of whoever did this to cause mayhem, create casualties," Kelly said. (1 image)

Yeah, sure, right.

Is it just me, or does it seem to anybody else like bombers have become, by and large, incredibly incompetent? The shoe "bomber", the "underwear bomber", the clown in this article? What happened to the crisp, competent engineering type of bomber who took pride in his work?

The top grade "bombers" that have changed this nation's political landscape (OKC, 9-11) are US government approved. What you see in the Fisher Price, Times Square bomber, is a lone KooK who the authorities are pretending to take seriously so they can justify their ever growing police state.

To be honest, I don't consider 9/11 to be a "bomber" job so much as an amateurish and inane "crash a plane into a building" job (or if you're inclined to conspiracy, shoot a missile into the Pentagon). OKC, who knows? Fertilizer though? I mean, c'mon.

Nah, I'm waxing rather nostalgic for the semi-mad scientist type with his white lab coat and round sunglasses who invents a mechanical wonder whose explosive operations are genius and whose implementation is masterful. The kind who, when the bomb explodes, can toast the demise of humanity with a nice glass of Scotch while quoting medieval poetry. You just don't get that kind of workmanship these days.

With OKC, both the ATF and FBI had informants inside Elohim City. It's a matter of record. McVeigh's lawyer introduced it all in his book above. With 9-11, Larry Silverstein said it all when he asked that WTC 7 be pulled.
