Exposed: Christian leader caught with male escort says he needed help with his luggage

By John Byrne Tuesday, May 4th, 2010 -- 2:10 pm Stumble This!

1610 Share 51 diggs digg

A Christian leader and prominent neuro-psychiatrist who co-founded the Family Research Council with evangelist James Dobson took a ten-day European vacation with a callboy he met through RentBoy.com and was caught in an airport with the escort by a Miami newspaper.

The escort said he had met George Rekers, professor of Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Science at the University of South Carolina, on RentBoy.com. Rekers, when confronted, didn't deny that he'd met the callboy online, but said he had hired him to help him carry his baggage and didn't learn he was generally hired for "private company" until mid-way through his European vacation.

"I had surgery," Rekers told Miami's New Times, "and I can't lift luggage. That's why I hired him." (The paper noted that it didn't stop him from pushing a "tottering" pile of luggage through Miami International Airport.)

The callboy, identified by a pseudonym, told the New Times' Penn Bullock and Brandon Thorp that Rekers claim that he didn't know his "line of work" seemed spurious.

"He should've been able to tell you that," he said. "But that's up to him."

Story continues below...

According to Penn and Thorp, the slender, 20-year-old escort's profile advertises his "smooth, sweet, tight ass" and "perfectly built 8 inch cock." RentBoy.com's profiles are not indexed by Google.

“It is clear that Rekers has baggage and certainly needs help,” said Wayne Besen, a prominent opponent of the "ex-gay" movement and director of the nonprofit Truth Wins Out. Referring to South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford, a conservative who claimed he was hiking when he'd actually been meeting with a mistress, he added: “At least he did not say he was walking the Appalachian Trail.”

"This is a bombshell that completely discredits the ex-gay industry and proves that the movement is a fraud,” Besen added.

The paper printed emails exchanged between the professor and the escort prior to their trip. Rekers co-founded the conservative and anti-gay Family Research Council with Rev. James Dobson in 1983.

"I'd like to propose another trip to Rome, Italy, for a week or more," Rekers purportedly wrote in an Mar. 21 email obtained by New Times. "This is so exciting to have a nice Travel Assistant and traveling companion! Wow! I'm so glad I met you."

"I called and talked to the reservation guy in London and reserved a room with two twin beds," Rekers allegedly remarked in a later email.

Rekers is a prominent advocate against gays in Florida, where he resides. He testified against Florida allowing gay couples to adopt, asserting that children of gay couples "living with a practicing homosexual in the adoptive home,” are especially “vulnerable to psychological damage and an increasing inability to adapt."

A commenter on a California Catholic daily, which reported the findings of Rekers' investigations into gay adoption, remarked, "The active principle in these children's stress is the fact that their welfare comes in dead last in the homosexual lifestyle - it is oriented toward grooming them for traumatic early sexualization and exploitation by adults."

The escort told New Times that Rekers is "primarily a family man," despite their European jaunt.

"You don't understand how much this guy honestly cares about taking care of kids," he was quoted as saying.

Reker is the author of "Growing Up Straight: What Families should Know about Homosexuality."

The relationship between morality and liberty is a directly proportional one.

"You've got to put right and wrong above legal and illegal. Because when tyranny becomes law, rebellion becomes duty; and it is not rebellion at all, it is submission to the higher law that our government is in rebellion to. We're not the rebels, they're the rebels."

It's been known to happen.

This is the second NARTH board member to be exposed as a fraud in the past three months. In February, Arthur Abba Goldberg was unmasked as a con artist who had served prison time for bond fraud. Goldberg was also the co-fonder of Jews Offering New Alternatives to Homosexuality (JONAH). Goldberg resigned from NARTH's board in shame.

I think we have to be careful with these kinds of stories though. SOME of them are no doubt perverts, con artists, crooks, swindlers, and government stooges however, SOME are genuine in their desire to help others. So, unfortunately it becomes a careful process of sifting and discrimination between crook and saint. It is all too easy to become cynical at the observance of human frailty and just plain cussedness. Unfortunately the supply of Mother Theresa's is much less than the supply of Jimmy Swaggarts. Charitable groups seem to attract both the very best and the very worst. I would note that this clown that inspired this thread IS a Psychiatrist again.

This was practically a public suicide. Why would Rekers hire for ANY reason - much less for help with luggage - from RENTBOY? For hetero luggage assistance, he could have found a suitable candidate almost anywhere. Even for homo companion, he could have found a suitable kindred spirit at a gay bar or maybe even a church choir. But hiring from RENTBOY meant that his "luggage assistant" was on the meter 24/10 ... and was motivated primarily (or entirely) by money, and thus especially inclined to go public.

Rekers, even a psychologist, may not have realized it at the time, but he was deliberately taking this foolhardy risk, and for a discernible reason.

Rekers has defended himself by saying (as he did to the Miami New Times) "Like Jesus Christ, I deliberately spend time with sinners ...." Quite a comparison; so modest. I hadn't heard that Jesus actually paid the sinners for the time spent with them.

The Miami New Times emphasized that the ONLY way to find this kid on the internet was to look up RENTBOY.com. He doesn't advertise anywhere else and he cannot be found directly by Google or any other search engine. And the only way to find him on the RENTBOY website is first to enter by agreeing to look at male homo porn, then through a number of pages that featured Very uninhibited photos and descriptions of homosexual acts. And, finally, this kid's own entry made it clear that you were not hooking up with him for his intellectual conversation.

How did Rekers even know about RENTBOY? Well, his day job certainly involved considerable close study of homosexual materials. In particular, RENTBOY.COM was mentioned by name in a major court case involving pedophilia; US v. Stoterau (9th Cir. April 29, 2008) 524 F.3d 988 cert.den (Jan. 12, 2009) _U.S._, 129 S.Ct. 957, 173 L.Ed.2d 153.

Rekers cannot pretend that he didn't know, if only from the other material on the one internet page that this kid appeared on.

just remember that all people will believe anything they've invested a lot of belief-energy into. bushbots, obamatrons, OJ simpson defenders, North Koreans, 'good germans' post WWII, whatever.

there isn't anything they WON'T believe, i think. when you tie belief to ego identity, asking people to change their views amounts to asking them to kill off part of their 'self', as they've defined it. Just ask people the Really Big Question: who are you? "Well, I'm a democrat, a republican, an engineer, etc...." But hardly anyone goes further than the most significant one, "I'm a human", which is to say that consciousness or spirit never enters their definition of self. Thats the granddaddy that depowers them more than anything else. Whats a human? What most people do or think is the definition of 'human'. Is that all there is? Yes, they say. Says who? "oh, well thats self evident, I have a mirror."

Yet if the physical is all they are, when the consciousness has flown the coop, but the body is still alive, as in a coma, etc, THEN what is a person?

As Robert Monroe said/says, "I am more than a physical body, because I am more, I can perceive more than the physical world, etc". If one adopts the model of a human as a spirit or consciousness residing within a physical form, and consciousness/spirit is without limit or boundary, now you are operating with an entirely different range. And really, past that point, controlling those who have reached that conclusion isn't technically possible. See?

this is why they are willing to die for ideas that everyone else can tell is obviously false, rather than allow the inclusion of new, contradictory information. "As a man thinketh, so is he"

'It is better to have less thunder in the mouth and more lightning in the hand.'

I like to give everyone the benefit of the doubt.
