"If you will go look up the definition of 'Act of God,' we've used it in legal terms for a long time in this state," Perry told reporters outside the Texas Capitol.

"It may be an accident and it may be something else," he said.

The Democratic group Lone Star Project criticized the Republican governor's remarks as "detached arrogance."

"Eleven men died when the drilling platform exploded. Hundreds of miles of coastland could be damaged for years and even decades. The families of those who died and the victims of the environmental damage deserve a full accounting for the human errors that caused the failure at the rig, the death of loved ones and the spoiling of our Gulf coastline," said Matt Angle, director of Lone Star Project.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry said Tuesday it's not wise to speculate about what caused an explosion and massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and he defended his use of the term "act of God" to describe the disaster.

Perry said Tuesday the phrase - which he used in a speech in Washington, D.C., on Monday when discussing the spill - is a legal definition and that his point is "nobody knows what happened" at the oil rig off the Louisiana coast. The undersea well has been spewing 200,000 gallons of oil a day.

The giant oil slick is threatening the Gulf Coast from southeastern Louisiana to Florida. Rig operator BP PLC has been trying unsuccessfully to cap the leak, which began April 20.

The governor cautioned against stopping oil drilling because of the spill, and said no one should speculate about what happened to further their political agenda.

"I go back to the safety of those workers, the safety of our coast. But you balance that with the impact that a knee jerk reaction to stop all drilling," Perry said.

He said he watched a news report featuring "one of the young Kennedys who was speculating that this hadn't been done and that hadn't been done. And frankly, speculation to promote one's position is irresponsible."

I leave it to the posters here who have a better handle on the English language to describe how much of low-life p.o.s. this Perry character seems to be.

Discouraging speculation is a sign of guilt or association with the guilty.

It's poor etiquette to question what happened?

That's insane.

Right. Cuz it was an 'Act of God'. Case closed. No questions asked. Or you might end up like them other Kennedys....

Yes, well oil drilling is not the problem. Oil spilling all over God's Creation is.

How it started spilling is a problem. Not cleaning it up is a problem.

Notice how many boats are out there cleaning it up?

Thinking about nothing but their bottom line they are.

Discouraging speculation is a sign of guilt or association with the guilty.

As a likely stockholder he's probably running interference for the insurance companies (and not Lloyd's of London) that could be bankrupted unless it's ruled "an act of God".

No doubt some concerned, "deep pockets CEO" called the governor and whispered a suggestion, "introduce "Act Of God" into the public stream of partial consciousness" to start the spin toward a taxpayer-funded cleanup. ("I can see that CEO's New Orleans corporate high rise office from Austin, and no one ever tells him no....")

And, the lawsuit to recover the costs from foreign drilling interests will take 50 years and cost 40 trillion dollars in legal fees, assuming of course that instead of paying, Great Britain doesn't just wipe the slate on the remaining WWII debt we owe them.....

I mean, who knew that with THE LEND LEASE PROGRAM we promised to supply the fuel for the ships we sent to the UK, and we failed to do so. And the compound interest on that fuel debt is now well over 40 trazillion dollars in gold......

That makes sense, thank you. I still don't like him though.

And frankly, speculation to promote one's position is irresponsible."

Damn straight!

Until all facts are known this should not be blamed on offshore drilling or even BP. People are using this spill to further their own agendas without knowing the facts and before any actual damage has occurred to the shores. Totally irresponsible.

God is always good!

Who's 'speculating to promote one's position'?
