Kagan helped shield Saudis from 9/11 lawsuits

elena kagan Kagan helped shield Saudis from 9/11 lawsuits

Elena Kagan, President Barack Obama's latest nominee to the Supreme Court, helped protect the Saudi royal family from lawsuits that sought to hold al Qaeda financiers responsible in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

The suits were filed by thousands of family members and others affected by the Sept. 11 attacks. In court papers, they provided evidence that members of the Saudi royal family had channeled millions to al Qaeda prior to the bombings, often in contravention of direct guidance from the United States.

But Kagan, acting as President Obama's Solicitor General, argued that the case should not be heard even if evidence proved that the Saudis helped underwrite al Qaeda, because it would interfere with US foreign policy with the oil-rich nation. She posited “that the princes are immune from petitioners’ claims” because of “the potentially significant foreign relations consequences of subjecting another sovereign state to suit.”

In an interview with the Philadelphia Inquirer published Tuesday, the mother of a man who was killed on United Flight 93 in Pennsylvania said he didn't know why Kagan argued that the case not even be heard. By keeping the case off the dockets, the Saudis were spared scrutiny of their finances.

"We had hoped she would be with us so that we could have our day in court," Beverly Burnett said. Story continues below...

“I find this reprehensible,” said Kristen Breitweiser, another family member whose husband was killed in the 9/11 attacks, said at the time. “One would have hoped that the Obama administration would have taken a different stance than the Bush administration, and you wonder what message this sends to victims of terrorism around the world.”

The Obama Administration's decision to intervene in the Saudi-al Qaeda case so irritated two Republican senators that they introduced legislation aiming to ensure that Americans have the ability to sue foreign governments.

Sen. Arlen Specter (D-PA) and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) offered a proposal to amend the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act, which Kagan cited as one reason the Saudi case should not be heard. Both senators said that US citizens should be able to sue foreign governments if they are found to be supporting terrorist activity.

Specter, who has since become a Democrat, was unusually blunt.

"She wants to coddle the Saudis," he said. ADVERTISEMENT

So Obama has nominated a person who says that even if the facts show that somebody is guilty of something, that the case should be denied on political reasons alone.

How utterly Soviet.

I am literally racing to get things canned right now. We really need to get a very large load of firewood to season over the summer as well.

These kinds of "revelations" and pushes for control are huge and unsettlingly frequent these days, like every week there's a new topic/push, and nothing seems to stop the pushes. Obeyme is doing his damndest to destroy the nation, and is even trying to take Europe down as well (recommending Germany and France bail out Greece, which would cause their ratings to take a real, terrible drop). This guy hates Europeans, here and in Europe, if you catch my drift.

Guess it's just my Spider Senses tingling or something, but man, the hairs on the back of my neck that normally only stand up during rare events that always come to transpire, seem to be going into overdrive right now. I don't believe in supernatural psychic stuff, but I do think that there's some part of my subconscious brain that actively processes and connects events to outcomes and sees big nasty things coming down the road when they're miles away. It's feeling now like they're not miles away, but just a block or two before they hit.

If I have to boogie I can only carry so much food with me to begin with. For that situation I have coast guard approved "sea" rations (not the military kind, rather the kind approved for emergency nautical situations). Compact air sealed bars, each 2400 calories, one pack can last you days and is about the size of a balled hand per pack. If we have to bug out, that's what we're taking. Stuffing cans, glass or metal, into a backpack is highly inefficient and we'd get far less food, in my view.

For now I have to plan as if we're going to lay low and be extremely quiet and get by without leaving the house much. Canning, non-hybrid seeds, water gathering (we gather water off the roof right now for gardening that I'm sure could be used for other things *innocent whistle*), heat, and loads of nearby forests/trees and a handy axe (*another innocent whistle*), and weapons.
