I remember a time when people weren't hyphenated Americans, and we didn't give a goddamn about where you fucking came from. We only cared about whether or not your loyalty was to America. Yeah, I know. They just make me mad to see them yammering about being "Mexican-Americans" as if they could be both. You are either an American or you're not. I suspect these feel so strongly about their "heritage" that they should be beating feet back to the border and stay in Mexico when they get there.

I know what you're saying. I have been telling people for almost thirty years how the government is shafting them. Every once in a while you see a light come on and somebody really is at home but not often and it gets discouraging. I don't know if the words "culture" and illiterate Mexicans go together too well. They call themselves "Hispanics" but how close you reckon any of them have ever been to Spain? Are they proud to have been subjects of the Spanish government?

Yeah, most of them have probably been about as close to Africa as I have, which is to say "not very." Even Shirley Q. I lived in Huntinton Beach in Southern Califorina for 3 months in 1969. The beaches and neighberhoods were well maintained and basically white. I visited in 1990, and except for Beverly Hills, it was run down and lots of Mexicans. I suspect it is basically Mexicans now. Since they have or soon will have the majority, they get to define who rules where they live. If they choose to become part of Mexico, they will have that choice.
