Univision forum held on Arizona's immigration law

MIAMI - Detractors and defenders of Arizona's crackdown on illegal immigration aired their views in a lively town-hall style meeting broadcast nationally Friday night by the Spanish-language network Univision.

The commercial-free forum held in Phoenix and Miami comes in the wake of Arizona's new law some critics fear could lead to racial profiling.

The measure requires police to ask a person about his or her immigration status if there's "reasonable suspicion" that the person is in the country illegally. Being in the country illegally would be a state crime under the law.

Arizona's Maricopa County Sheriff Joseph Arpaio urged people to give the law a chance before passing judgment. The measure is set to go into effect July 29.

"This is just another law. I am not concerned about the hype, the threats, the racial profiling" accusations, Arpaio said. "We are talking about illegal immigration - that when you cross that border, you have broken the law."

Experts on immigration law and public policy, representatives of national Hispanic organizations and advocates for tougher enforcement against illegal immigrants also attended. The White House also sent a representative.

If federal immigration reform depended "only on the will of the president, it would already be done," said Cecilia Munoz, director of the Office of Intergovernmental Affairs. "But we have to work with Congress."

Arizona sheriff Antonio Estrada of Santa Cruz County criticized the new law, saying it requires local law enforcement to enforce what used to be a matter for federal authorities.

"In Santa Cruz, we don't have the budget to add another level of authority," he said. "The Border Patrol doesn't do the work for local officers. They don't investigate robberies, assaults, homicides."

Nevertheless, he promised to enforce the law.

"We're going to study this well and see how to apply it with the maximum compassion and common sense possible," he said.

Arpaio, meanwhile, took to task U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez for his opposition to Arizona's law. The Illinois Democrat was among 35 people arrested about a week ago during a protest at the White House.

"You were locked up in front of the White House. You were safer here in Phoenix," Arpaio said. "We do not racial profile, we do not go on street corners and round up people because they look like different people."

More than 200 seats at the Univision studios in Miami were filled, and the crowd spilled over into a media viewing room.

A group of students wore white T-shirts reading "30644" _ a number people can text to show support for the DREAM Act, long-sought federal legislation that would provide relief to some illegal immigrants who arrived before age 16.

An Associated Press-Univision poll released Thursday found sharp contrasts between the views of Hispanics and others on immigration. A resounding majority of Hispanics say illegal immigrants are a boon to the country, while most non-Hispanics say illegal immigrants are a drain on society.

The poll also found most Hispanics condemn Arizona's strict new law targeting undocumented immigrants, while only 20 percent of non-Hispanics oppose it.

Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer said ethnic profiling will not be tolerated under the law she signed in April.

Now, if Mexico were to Invade Arizona, would anyone really give a damn? Seriously, when you think about it. How many Americans do you think would take the time to march down there to take back what is ours?

Now, let's say California secedes, and joins Mexico. Does anyone really want to go back to California and take it from Mexico?

The people of this country simply do not give a damn. They aren't willing to stand up to a government that has betrayed them, what makes anyone here believe that our own people would stand and fight for the lands already occupied by a foreign force?

I hope you're wrong, that if Mexico sent its armed forces (such as they are) to take any state by armed force that the American people would repel them. But they haven't repelled the invasion that isn't connected to their armed forces so who knows?

They can call it racial profiling or by any other name, but it just so happens that we (the government) has allowed them to come here illegally. They need rounded up and sent back to mexico and the border should be sealed. Washington isn't gonna act to protect Arizona or us. They allowed them to come because businesses wanted the cheap labor.

Assuming our votes still count, vote against any incumbent. They all need to go. I can't beleive the rotten bastards in Washington hate America so much that they are not only leaving the border open allowing them to come here, they have granted them enough incentives with freebies including welfare of all kinds, enticing them to come. Arizona has finally taken some first steps in solving the problem and the commie bastards in Washington are upset because Arizona is trying to protect its citizens from these criminal wetbacks. I hope sheriff Joe Arpaiodoes his fine service as usual and rounds them up ridding Arizona of the illegal problem. Any outsider politicans who dare travel to Arizona ought to be rounded up and arrested also. Joe could put them in pink skirts and take pictures and post them on the internet. I donate money for him to buy the pink skirts. They aren't here for work because there isn't any. They're here to invade with Washington's blessing!

And once again the Big Lie gets told. This time, it's a lie of omission.

They can't just pull you over if they have "reasonable suspicion". You HAVE TO BE COMMITTING AN ACTUAL CRIME FIRST AND BE CAUGHT, before the reasonable suspicion ever kicks in.

It is ever so telling how the MSM refuses to ever mention that part.

MapQuest really needs to start their directions on #5. Pretty sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood.

I think they will have plenty of time and plenty of opportunities to use the new law against drunk illegals--they probably kill more Americans every year than have been killed in Afghanistan and Iraq. And of course there are things like convenience store robberies, liquor stores, etc., etc. I doubt cops will have to stand and scratch their heads for ten minutes to think of a reasonable suspicion that the illegals may have done something they weren't supposed to. And don't think I am not agreeing with you. If there is no sign or evidence that any crime is being committed the person should not be bothered. But illegals commit LOTS of crimes in addition to their border jumping.
