I once had a girlfriend who was probably the most fearless woman I’ve ever known but the first time she encountered a cicada infestation she collapsed. This was a woman who at five years old decided to shimmy 20 feet up a light pole, sit at the top, and wave to the passing cars. When I asked her if any of her parents found out, she said her mother, used to such things, came to the pole and wearily asked her to come down. She also told me that, also at the age of five, when she found out some guy was picking on her older brother, she marched to his house to beat him up. I have forgotten the outcome of that one. Once, in Branson, Missouri, she wanted to go on a ride that you’d have to pay me a lot of money to go on. It consisted of two very tall metal poles, each attached to an elastic band. The bands were attached to a spherical metal framework. Two people sat in the seats in the framework, were strapped in with their hands crossed over their chests (ready-made for a pine box, in my opinion) and shot probably a good 50 feet into the air, while the metal ball spun crazily and the people screamed. I told her I was not going on this! She really wanted to and was disappointed that I would not. I did some fun reckless things, mostly when I was a teenager, but this ride was way beyond my pay grade. But she liked these things. Yet the first time there was a cicada infestation in her area she fell to pieces. Cicadas are scary-looking little beasts, but they are completely harmless. These were the black kind with the red eyes, and they buzzed horribly. But they are completely harmless. You couldn’t convince my girlfriend of that, though. The fact there were hundreds of millions of these things almost caused her to have a stroke. Her house was covered with them. They flew at her and dive-bombed her, and it just utterly freaked her out. Here was the ritual to get her from the car to the house. She wore a sweatshirt with a hood, and she’d pull the hood tight over her head, and cinch the drawstring tight. If that wasn’t funny enough, she also had a flyswatter which she waved in front of her fact while she ran shrieking from the car to the house. My job was to run behind her to make sure no cicadas landed on her. “Bob! Bob! Is there a cicada on me?!?!?” “No, there’re no cicadas on you.” “Are you lying to me?!?!?” “No, I am not lying to you. There are no cicadas on you.” Finally she would fly into the house and slam the door behind us. Then my next job was to go outside and sweep the cicadas off the windows, the front of the house and the porch. She was just completely hysterical about the existence of these things. Bugs don’t bother me, except for wasps. I don’t even mind bees, which are cute. I don’t like spiders, but don’t have a problem as long as they don’t hurl themselves on me. I don’t even mind snakes and once petted a ribbon snake in my front yard. But how in the world can this mostly-fearless woman be so afraid of an utterly harmless bug is a question to which I have no answer. But almost all girls are just terrified to bugs. And mice, for that matter. Of course, I never mention her reaction to her. But there’s about another seven years to the next outbreak in her area, so she’s going to throw a fit again.

Ever seen a cicada brod come out? Billions of them. Imagine thousands of them on your house, your windows, your porch...then you'll get an idea of what it's like.

One woman and a shop vac can deal with thousands (billions.....lol) of harmless cicada and it wouldn't be worthy of writing an article about it. That's how I dealt with a moth infestation--moths everywhere on the house, in the house, on the porch--a couple years back. Little buggers didn't stand a chance. ; )

isn't it? it choked me up, and i'm not all that crazy about those little critters either. i feel sorry for them though, when i see them being gobbled up by the squirrels and birds after they have waited 17 years for their big moment. the squirrels grow fat every 17 years, so they're happy. the little cicada carcasses pile up at the base of the trees and they are quite stinky for awhile, but it is an amazing phenomenon.

Harmless to people but not to our crops. So in a way they are harmful to people. Farmers in the Australian outback are facing a potential crop disaster as locust swarms sweep across farmlands. (April 22)

Come'on, P. Actually, the death of all the first born children of Egypt, including that of the Pharoah, was what finally got his attention and made him regret trifling with God and his people. Exodus, chapters 9-12 for the full story, all the plagues and how Pharoah couldn't be bothered too much until it got real personal. Maybe this guy could have written an article about Men Becoming Women instead of this one? Many people ride that. I've ridden that. My son, 13, has ridden that. What man has ever referred to any insect as "cute"? Ooh, petted one. Well hey diddly ho. You petted a garter snake. We used to hunt those things mercilessly, catch them, and keep them in our rooms for fun, as kids. Same with corn snakes, and black snakes which I'm certain would send this gelatin spined dork running and screaming. We'd even strain to catch glimpses of copperheads, assuming we were tromping through the woods (usually with guns, gasp) and smelled the strange smell of cucumbers. This much is true. They don't even like the "cute" ones. *eyeroll*
MapQuest really needs to start their directions on #5. Pretty sure I know how to get out of my neighborhood.

Ask her if she would like you to attract cicada killers. I bet I know what her answer would be... These wasps are over an inch long. Harmless though. Spiders do it for me. I have been known to go out of my way to kill them. Especially the little brown ones inside the house. They can be not-so-harmless. .

You have never been in a brood, have you? Outside, you cannot escape. Scientists have said there are not billions in a brood, but trillions, Outside, you cannot escape them. And as for your shop-vac, you don't have a clue. These bugs are mostly mush. You know what the inside of the vac would look like? You want to shop vac them, fine. you'll never do it again. Talk about things you know about. And you know nothing about cicadas.

I already had thousands of moths in my Shop Vac--WORKED FINE. Simply rinse it out after sucking up bugs. Yes, I know what the Shop Vac looks likeafter sucking up bugs. Yes, I would do it again......and again.........and again. Cicadas, moths--BUGS. Like I said, don't go outside when the once in 17 year infestation of cicadas hits your area....especially if you are so afraid of them and your ears are harmed and you can't escape. (no brainer) Gee, with the way you whine about it one would think that thousands of people drop dead every 17 years over the cicada infestation........but we both know that isn't true. People survive to whine another year........lol.
