The Supreme Court ruled Monday the federal government has the power to indefinitely keep some sex offenders behind bars after they have served their sentences, if officials determine those inmates may prove "sexually dangerous" in the future.

"The federal government, as custodian of its prisoners, has the constitutional power to act in order to protect nearby (and other) communities from the danger such prisoners may pose," Justice Stephen Breyer wrote for the 7-2 majority.

This is a VERY BAD precedent, and a very scary one.

You're right on point. They should increase the penalty if necessary and even make some form of parole a requirement, but once the individual has PAID the price of his crime to society he should be released.

Maybe certain (sexual) violent crimes should be mandatory life sentences. Once paid, neither the State nor the courts should ever be allowed to hold someone indefinitely.

Exactly. I think that repeat drunken drivers should be kept off of the road permanently, but that does not mean an "extra-legal" indefinite detention because they are a risk. Once they have fulfilled their sentence, paid their fine, and any other legal requirements they should be left alone unless they commit another crime.

Indefinite detention for any crime, once the sentence is complete, is an abomination and repugnant to a free society.

However it's just peachy for a Gulag State.

I know...it was the best I could come up with in a moment of sheer rage.

I KNOW one and OF several young men who have had their lives ruined by this, one of the most heinous of crimes when actually committed. I have already seen how they are able to throw away the key if the man, for instance, cannot tell them from his prison cell where he is going to live when he gets out with NO friends or family to take him in until he can ATTEMPT to get a job when NO ONE WILL HIRE A "SEX OFFENDER".

I knew a guy (he died a few years ago) named Jim that had been given 32 electro- shock treatments in the Navy because he went on a fast in order to strengthen his prayers for his mother that was ill.

He was discharged from the Navy like everyone else. 19 years later they had to pay him 100% disability (retroactively) for what they'd done to him. Until that time he was a street person just barely getting by.

The FEDERAL (RESERVE BANK) GOVERNMENT ain't nobody's friend !

That is so disgusting that I cannot come up with words to describe it. Psychs hate religion of all kinds, it is listed as a "disorder" in the DSM IV, and the stronger the belief the more they hate it (I suspect it is because many of them are perverts and criminals and fear God's wrath - Psychs have the highest rate of prosecution for sexual abuse of patients, and financial fraud - my favorite was the one who saw 200 Medicare Patients the day he was in the Bahamas Golfing, of all types of doctors). To merely survive 32 electro shock electric Cattle Prod treatments is amazing - many people die on the first one. I have a cousin that is nearly a vegetable because of it, and a friend, who survived 5 "treatments", who is schizophrenic.

Padilla is a good example - they scooped him right off the plane with no charges other than vague ones, put him in a Naval "detention facility" and then released him to trial, as a near vegetable, 6 months later. This is your brain on Psychiatry.

One of the most fascinating things about Jim (my street people friend) was that after all of this ... he taught himself to speak RUSSIAN.

That reminds me of a guy, on the street, I befriended during a severe snow storm who was outside freezing at a bus stop. Former Naval Officer, Degree in Engineering, and pretty much dysfunctional otherwise. His father left him fixed but he managed to lose it all and wound up on the street. He could carry on an intelligent conversation, but otherwise behaved like an abused puppy. Part of his confusion was that he seemed to have trouble remembering things. While I don't know the details I suspect he was another Psych product. He worked in a high security field and oftentimes, I've learned, they give them a post hypnotic implant to not talk about any security material and in some cases it really really screws people up. Which squares with his inability to remember - the post hypnotic command likely was causing him to have trouble remembering much of anything - and he did not drink or do drugs. It is insidious too - you might be setting in a waiting room - they flood it with a narcotic gas, do their foul work, and you wake up in the same waiting room not recalling any of what went on and thinking you just dozed off. I knew another man who had the same symptoms but was not as bad, but same profile - Officer and worked in Intelligence.

Oh how fun. Just think, combined with Joe "Heinrich Himmler" Lieberman's bill that would allow the expatriation of anybody the government declares a terrorist sans a trial, well, anything's possible.

What does your defensive posture about voting have to do with this precedent as you claim? The US government has been reformed into an fascist-aristocracy for years; I claimed GWBush's Guantanamo Bay Club (as Limbaugh affectionately called it) was an earlier description of a despot government.

Ever since the US Patriot Act, wherein US citizen's mail (whether electronic or through other methods) are now routinely surveyed by the US government there has been increasing rule of government by nothing more than the order of a secret court. Even before, foreign electronic transmissions were intercepted and documented about "certain" individuals.

You are too defensive at times. And today you see the Supremes play with the so-called rule of law. Tomorrow, it will be anyone within the government club ruling against the citizenry.
