A 67-year-old Yuba City woman was shot and killed by officers when she pointed a shotgun at them and refused to put it down, Yuba City police said Friday.

Victoria Helen Roger-Vasselin was pronounced dead late Thursday at her home at 764 Mariner Loop in an affluent neighborhood on the city's far south side.

An autopsy Friday showed she died of "multiple gunshot wounds," said Sutter County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Brenda Baker.

A neighbor reported hearing five or six shots.

Roger-Vasselin was the sister of the late Thomas E. Mathews, a Yuba County judge and district attorney.

"They shot her dead," Roger-Vasselin's distraught son, Christian Biscotti, said outside the house Friday morning.

"I think she was just startled" by late visits to her home, he said.

Before Biscotti could say more, a relative or family friend took him by the arm and led him inside, shutting the door.

Officers went to the Mariner Loop home after receiving a call at 9:04 p.m. about weapons being brandished, according to a police incident log. In a press release, police did not say exactly when the shooting happened.

Police scanner traffic indicated the shooting happened about 10:20 p.m.

A U.S. Census worker "had been confronted by residents who pointed a firearm at the worker and said they would not answer any questions and closed the door," said police spokeswoman Shawna Pavey.

When two male officers arrived, 51-year-old Lionel Craig Patterson answered the door, armed with a handgun, police said.

"As officers were dealing with the male, a female approached the door with a shotgun and ignored officers' orders to release the weapon. As the female advanced on officers, she continued to point the shotgun at officers in a threatening manner and the two officers fired their service weapons, hitting the female," the police report said.

Both officers fired their guns, said Pavey, adding she didn't believe Roger-Vasselin or Patterson fired.

Both officers were uniformed and clearly identifiable as police, Pavey said.

Pavey said toxicology tests will determine if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the incident.

Sonny Le, regional spokesman for the U.S. Census Bureau, offered a different version of events. The female census taker knocked on the door at 7:45 p.m. about 25 minutes before sunset when workers are supposed to quit. The Roger-Vasselin home was the last one on her list before she went home, he said.

Patterson answered the door and first talked with the census taker, Le said.

"The visit was quite routine" until Roger-Vasselin approached with a gun, he said.

The census taker immediately left and called her supervisor. It was 9:04 p.m. when police were called, after news of the incident traveled up the Census Bureau's chain of command, Le said.

Le called the incident especially tragic because the census taker, like Roger-Vasselin, is a Yuba City resident.

Patterson was arrested on suspicion of assault with a weapon on a police officer and was being held without bail Friday in Sutter County Superior Court.

The officers have been placed on routine administrative leave while the Sutter County District Attorney's Office determines if the shooting was justified. District Attorney Carl Adams said he did not yet have all the facts.

A neighbor, Bob Dhaliwal, said he was in bed when he heard people, including one woman, shouting and yelling, followed by five or six shots. When he came outside, officers with guns drawn had the male suspect on the ground, then took him away in a patrol car, he said.

"All I saw was him being arrested. I assumed he shot somebody," Dhaliwal said.

Patterson lives at the same address. Pavey and neighbors said it wasn't clear what the relationship was between him and Roger-Vasselin.

Dhaliwal and other neighbors said they didn't know Roger-Vasselin well.

"She kept to herself," Dhaliwal said.

One neighbor, who declined to give her name, described Roger-Vasselin as "pleasant but reserved," almost reclusive.

"She was much more social when she moved first moved in. The economy was better then," the neighbor said.

Neighbors said they had also received nighttime visits from a female census worker.

Roger-Vasselin owned the house for about three years but rented it for about six months while she worked in Hawaii, returning to Yuba City six to nine months ago, the neighbor said.

When her mother, Lillian Mathews-Crumrine, died in 1998, Roger-Vasselin lived in Kauai, Hawaii.

When Roger-Vasselin's brother, Judge Thomas E. Mathews, died in 2005, she was living in San Francisco. Then 63 and a regional membership executive at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, she was one four employees involved in an age-discrimination lawsuit against the Marriott Corp.

Give dumb a-holes guns and the authority to use them and this is what you get. All they had to do was leave her property and all this could have been avoided. Instead they kill her on her own property.

Americans don't get it ... there's a war going on.

The lady in the article was 67 years old ... seems to me she had conducted her life well until this unnecessary invasion of her privacy ... shot at 10:30 P.M. ... this is intolerable, it's 1st degree murder.

That's it. Just "approached with a gun". No word about pointing it at the worker. Just "approached with a gun" so she had to go off and call the police.

My sister does census work. I don't think people should be pointing guns at her. Only one guy gave her a hard time, and he was teasing. He said he had 13 Mexicans in his apartment, then changed it to 13 Koreans. They were both laughing, but he wouldn't tell her the truth. Besides, he and his friend inside were clearly drinking.

The good thing about guns is that the remove the deficient from this world. Like these morons brandishing guns at census workers.

Still and all, it is more than unwise to escalate a situation in which there is no threat to life or property by introducing firearms into the picture. It's really foolish.

One has to be extra circumspect in states like California that have the offense of "brandishing" in their state codes.

These sorts of incidents do a disservice to law-abiding gun owners everywhere.

The beyotch wouldn't have badgered me for an hour or even anything close to three minutes. I would have told her how many people lived there and closed the door. If she knocked again I might say "Already asked and answered" and then go back to whatever I was doing.

Agree completely.

If you show it, it should be with the intent of using it. (Unless you're going for death by cop.)

the offense of "brandishing"

To brandish is to "Wave around menacingly."

The simple act of being armed is not brandishing.

It's unfortunate that you weren't there, noone, to offer up your dictionary definition as officers arrived on the scene.

They will apply the definition of any given offense as it stands in the code as liberally as possible.

And the person with the weapon will be screwed.

A lawyer will also make the note on his boat that month.

I see psyops everywhere.

She wasn't hurt, so I don't really see why she called the police. I bet she wishes she didn't now. Police really seem to have very little intelligence these days and total disregard for human life. Andy Griffith would have handled this a lot better.

It's unfortunate that you weren't there, noone, to offer up your dictionary definition

bran·dish34; 34;/Èbrændjƒ/ Show Spelled[bran-dish] Show IPA –verb (used with object) 1.to shake or wave, as a weapon; flourish: Brandishing his sword, he rode into battle. –noun

2.a flourish or waving, as of a weapon.

Use brandishing in a Sentence See images of brandishing Search brandishing on the Web

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Origin: 1275–1325; ME bra(u)ndisshen < AF, MF brandiss- (long s. of brandir, deriv. of brand sword < Gmc). See brand, -ish2

—Related forms bran·dish·er, noun

—Synonyms 1. swing, flaunt, wield, display.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In a country that clearly accepts as legal the possession of arms in the home it follows that to display a weapon surely must also be "legal".

I wasn't there but if I were making judgments related to this case the two cops that fired on this woman (at 10:24 P.M.) without having been fired upon first better have video that presents the lady's acts as threatening or they would be tried for murder.

Hopefully, a video was recorded that will allow for a more detailed and factual representation of what really happened.

Lastly, in view of the fact that the FEDS completely ignore the "CON"stitution 99% of the time it seems a little over the top to have an incident like this occur at all.

A). Couldn't the census worker have temporarily accepted the refusal of the people at this address and simply have reported it to superiors for further action ?

B). Why was the census worker there for over an hour if the people didn't wish to participate ?

C). Did the census worker incite the people or anger them ?

The lady that was killed didn't attack the police station ... she was in her home minding her own business when people claiming to be government officials spent 3 hours badgering and ultimately murdering her.

I am one of those people that sees the government as the people's primary enemy. I do not think the status most often afforded public officials is deserved or superior to that of the private party.

If a series of assholes started banging on my door at 7:30 P.M. and were still being obnoxious at 10:30 P.M. regardless of who they claimed to be ... I'd certainly be weary of their presence, wouldn't you.

The legal reality of the census is that the FED have the option of taking one to court for refusing to comply, not send the cops to kill them.

while the Sutter County District Attorney's Office determines that the shooting was justified.

Yeah, like Ruby Ridge or WACO ...

I see this abomination as another reason to opt out of the federal environment/jurisdiction. Whether or not the feds will accept the dissolution of the shotgun marriage that has existed is irrelevant in my viewpoint.

The federal (reserve bank) govt. is an abusive spouse that berates, belittles and beats his wife continuously without mercy. I found the situation intolerable especially when the federal (reserve bank) govt. spouse started also beating my friends, family, and even foreigners to death IN MY NAME and with my fucking money.

So, I divorced that no good cocksucker and if'n he should show up round these parts lookin for some trouble ... he'll fuckin find it.

EDIT: I just wanted to add that isolation from society in general is my choice. However, people trying to shake loose from the federal satanists should develop a rapid response team willing to remove a few of these murdering bastards from the gene pool.

If we saw a rabid pit bull attacking one of our neighbor's children we wouldn't hesitate to take that dog out. Law enforcement in many cases has diligently made every effort to lower societies opinion of their behavior. That's really sad but not the publics concern when the pit bull has the kids leg in its mouth.

Yes, hopefully.

Folks get into some rather heated, often ridiculous arguments over stories in which there is a dearth of hard information.

But I will say that bringing in the prospect of lethal force where there was no such apprehension in the first place is an act that I would circumspectly avoid.

I had my talk with the Census yesterday. It took about two minutes. I gave the minimum of information, and there were no hard words. It was all quite civil. I didn't even hafta haul out my twelve gauge.
