The leak is still, well, leaking. There is 30+ days more of this type and volume of oil behind this. 60 miles, at last check, of the most productive deltaic region in the world are fouled. Much of this area is mangrove cane marshes, and cannot be feasibly 'cleaned.' It is unknown how badly this will effect the wildlife, but it is enough to shut down production within Barataria bay, the largest single fisheries area in the state of louisiana. Entire communities, dependent on these areas for the baseline of their economies, will be summarily affected. Said communities generally encompass the houma-thibideaux and greater new orleans metro areas.
Imagine the midwest without farming. This is what you could very well be looking at. It is not an exaggeration, nor hyperbole. This is the shutdown of roughly 15% of the entire seafood production of the united states. (+50% of Louisiana, which produces roughly 33% of the whole US)
It's not just a terrible incident, it's a clusterfark of gigantic proportions. The well is not capped, and we are approaching what has every indication of being a hyperactive hurricane season whose best analog year is 2005. This is not a guarantee, yet, but the bermuda high has set itself almost exactly the same. SST's are abnormally high, and the only thing stopping formation right now is high sheer leftover from el nino. Heat content in the carribean is already at the level of being able to support a category 3 or above hurricane.
This is already bad. It could get much worse. That's the big picture

Thank you Jethro. I've spent most of my free time since becoming an adult in the ocean, near the ocean, or planning our next trip to the ocean. I'm waiting to see what happens when the hurricanes and gulf stream do to this. I really do hope it will desperse.

Along with the oil is a chemical called Corexit.. a toxic dispersant that destroys all life .. BP has pumped thousands of gallons of Corexit into the Gulf by aerial spraying and by pumping it next to the oil volcano .... wait till a hurricane brings the Corexit up the East Coast... this is a note from a Floridian

Well, yes, but actually just another episode in what has become the one long, torturous nightmare in which we are immersed. We have slowly but surely descended into an incompetent, ill-educated, mammonized cultural-economic-political cesspool. My mind picture of our situation is of of nationwide old fashioned wake with the corpse of Uncle Sam propped up in the midst and stinking to high heaven. Party on! If anyone intrudes with a solution of which step-one is not mass executions, just push the idiot aside (or, if you're younger than me, knock him on his ass).. Another word picture of our great nation? How 'bout an avenue as far as the eye can see lined with kool aid stands on each side of it. At the moment I see our best hope as being the final step of a Chinese bloodless takeover.

At the rate it is pumping out of the ocean floor, which based on leaked reports coming out is likely at least ten times the volume the government and BP is admitting to, I'm afraid all a hurricane will do is spread the damage farther inland and over a wider expanse. I am trying not to be gloom and doom but this spill is, even if were stopped today, catastrophic in its impact on the gulf. Another 30 to 90 days and it will include the lower Atlantic seaboard as it spreads out via the gulf stream. No, this is now the worst oil catastrophe in human history and it holds the potential to be the last.

That's what I've been thinking. As if things aren't bad enough, we could have this mess placed in a blender and sent to the four corners of the globe. I'm so glad I spent the month of April in S. Florida on the Gulf. I have no idea what it will look like next year.

I'm sorry to be the one to tell you this but, the first hurricane's tidal surge will defeat every single boom and dredged berm protecting coastal beaches, marshes and real estate, and Louisiana, Mississippi, parts of Texas and Florida will then be abandoned or become long term remediation projects, not unlike Chernobyl.

The Mississippi flyway is the most important migratory route of the four major North American flyways. Imagine the toll in four or five months when tens of thousands of Mallards, Scaup, Widgeons, Canada and Snow Geese, etc., land in oil, and from which there will be no escape. The good people from Delaware's TRI STATE BIRD RESCUE struggle as it is to rescue oiled birds. There aren't enough volunteers or BLUE DAWN DISH DETERGENT in the world to save the birds in a single flyway during the winter migration. Never mind ducks and geese, the brown pelicans, egrets, herons, mute and trumpeter swans and fishers such as ospreys and eagles will overwhelm the resources, if they haven't already.
