As Rand Paul aligns himself with anti-immigrant forces, father Ron Paul comes out in favor of DADT repeal

Republican Senate candidate and Tea Party hero Rand Paul says he opposes granting citizenship to the children of illegal immigrants who are born in the United States.

In an interview with Russia Today, flagged by Jillian Rayfield at TalkingPointsMemo, Paul appeared to join the anti-immigrant sentiment running through his party in recent years, telling the news network that the practice of granting citizenship to all persons born on US soil -- as mandated by the 14th Amendment -- "should stop."

"We're the only country that I know that allows people to come in illegally, have a baby, and then that baby becomes a citizen," Paul said.

On that point, it would appear Paul is misinformed. Dozens of countries around the world adhere to the principle of Jus soli, "right of soil," meaning citizenship based on a person's place of birth. Among the countries where persons are automatically granted citizenship by virtue of

Rand Paul has invented something new to America: the native-born foreigner.

For a right-to-lifer, he's hit upon a method to make sure that undocumented aliens won't have their babies in hospitals, might not even get pre-natal medical care, for fear some nurse or doctor will insist on seeing their green cards.

that shouldn't be the responsibility of americans, Shoonra. for pete's sake, are we to take in the whole world? how's this for a concept--America and Americans First.

might not even get pre-natal medical care

By and large they don't need it.

Prenatal care is for white chicks with eggs past their sell-by date, and lack thereof is still trotted out as a (false) explanation of high black infant mortality.

Pack up your troubles in your old kit bag and smile, smile, smile.

That's silly. The proposed law only relates to granting citizenship, not dispensing emergency care. And if the illegal's want babies to be citizens right now, then they have to provide some kind of ID information already.

Maybe you're confusing Rand Paul's proposal with Arizona's law.
