Can anybody stand to listen to Bush sing for the bots this evening? He'll be on at 7:30. If nobody wants to listen in I will understand.

That speech sucked. But am I surprised? I think he rates a thirty percent approval. We should have a pool for when he gets there.

One interesting comment on CBS after the speech stating that "we may never hear the words 'Social Security' from this administration again." I wonder how that's going to play on Wall Street, being as so many fund managers were banking on all of that sweet, sweet lucre flowing into their slush funds..er, that is to say, looking forward to carefully managing the retirement accounts of so many hardworking Americans...

I'm really curious to see what the polls show over the next couple of days. If there is no bounce this "Mendoza Line" talk I've been hearing tonight might be true. Below 40% enough people are on to the guy that he can't bullshit his way out of a mess anymore. He becomes powerless and can't recover. Personally, I can't say one way or the other, but it will be very interesting to watch.

He could just hang fire in place. As his influence evaporates his enemies will be better equipped to press their attackes. He could spend the rest of his term defending himself for the actions he took during his first term. The press has already turned against him. Bush has had the longest press honymoon in history and it's over. His propaganda engine is winding down as well. The last I heard Fox News viewership was off 48%. Rush and Hannity were down about 25%.

Assuming 300,000,000 men women and children in the US (good assumption, I think), this means 300X10^9/300^6 = 100,000 dollars per person in the US, or $400,000 bucks per family of four. I have always roughly figured one billion dollars ment about $three / capita for the US. So my calculation seem roughly correct.
If this 300 billion figure is true, then it's the largest reconstruction project in the history of the world. Percentage wise, it is on par with the New Deal programs of the 1930s. It sounds like Bush is (1) trying to buy votes, and (2) trying to keep the contruction industry alive through the housing crash.
