War, War, War See other War, War, War Articles Title: Still time to stop spending another $33-billion on Israel's Afghan war One Week to Stop $33.5 Billion for War Escalation DefundWar.org logo The Senate, as expected, has already passed the bill, but the House is always where we've had a chance and is all we need. Your representative in the House is home in his or her district this week, a perfect opportunity for you to talk to them before they return to Washington, D.C., next week and vote $33.5 billion to escalate the Afghan war. The most prominent excuse you'll hear is that good things may be packaged into the same bill. But those good things will n ot outweigh the damage done by the war escalation and could be passed separately. We cannot afford the human or financial cost. And the blowback from these wars endangers us all no matter what our domestic policies are. Keep track of where your representative stands at defundwar.org What to say: If you do not try to block the war escalation funding, I will try to block your reelection in November. If you support peace, I will support you. Please commit publicly to voting No, no matter what nice things that could be passed separately are packaged into the same vote. Please join the 70 congressional candidates from every political party who have signed a statement against war spending at caws.us A Campaign to Protect Our Votes Protect Our Elections Protect Our Elections is a new campaign to push for passage of pending national legislation to protect the votes and public elections of millions of Americans. We have identified common sense federal legislation that will help ensure the fairness of elections, starting with the 2010 mid-term election. It is necessary to call on Congress to demand passage of these important bills. Specifically, passage of legislation to stop unfair voter challenges, purging of voter rolls, felon disenfranchisement, misleading election information, unlimited corporate financing, and mandatory photo IDs in federal elections will protect voters this year. In addition, a strong, paper ballot requirement, to be fully implemented by 2012, will help protect our elections in time for the next presidential election and mitigate the threat from Internet voting. You can help in the following ways: 1) Sign the petition to tell your Congress Members to pass this pending legislation. Every person who signs on will have their name added to a second petition that we will deliver to Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid demanding quick passage of these bills. 2) Call your Congress Members and tell them that you want strong election protection legislation supported by ProtectOurElections.org passed this year. Enough delay! No legislation is more important than that which shores up our increasingly vulnerable electoral system. You can find the phone numbers here. 3) Urge your friends and favorite organizations to join with this campaign to protect our elections by calling on Congress to act now! 4) Spread the word through social networking tools so this campaign goes viral on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. Let us know when you post something so we can add it to this site. Amending Corporations Out of Our Constitution The US House of Representatives may soon have the opportunity to vote on whether to move forward with a constitutional amendment to ensure that we the people, not we the corporations, control our elections. On Thursday, Congresswoman Donna Edwards introduced a proposed amendment to the DISCLOSE Act (HR 5175), a bill that would require disclosure by corporations engaged in making political expenditures as a result of the US Supreme Court's recent ruling in Citizens United v. FEC. The Edwards language to be added to this bill would make clear that if the Supreme Court strikes down the disclosure law, "Congress should immediately consider and send to the states for ratification an amendment to the Constitution to permit Congress to regulate the expenditure of funds by corporations engaging in political speech." To see the full text of the Edwards language, click here. Congress needs to hear from us right away. Call your Member of Congress and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi at (202) 224-3121 (the Capitol Hill switchboard) and urge them to support Congresswoman Edwards' amendment to the DISCLOSE Act (HR 5175). This amendment to a bill could be the key to driving forward support for a necessary amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
