Not bad. Given that history education has been one of the targets of the dumbing down programs actually quite good.

Not at her (private) school. Their textbook is Paul Johnson's History of the American People. They did a book report on a biography of Nathaniel Greene. They also read Company Aytch, and portions of Life on the Mississippi, Autobiography of Ben Franklin, Common Sense (and other writings of Thomas Paine), Democracy in America, plus writings of Phillis Wheatley, John Smith, and John Winthrop.

Impressive. Actual writings of substance. I love Twain, and Life on the Mississippi paints a picture of a different America in different time - a time to which I would gladly return - "Marrrrrrrk Twainnnnnnnnn!". As pivotal as Common Sense was I still like "The American Crisis" - "These are the times that try men's souls ...".

Literature readings included Moby Dick and an anthology of Melville stories, A Farewell to Arms, Last of the Mohicans, The Great Gatsby, The Unvanquished ... that's all that I remember.

A worthy list - although my High School ramblings were slanted more toward Dumas, Twain, Heinlein, Zelazny, Poul Anderson, A. E. Van Voght, E.E. Doc. Smith, Asimov, Shakespeare, Robert E. Howard, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Jules Verne, and on and on - your basic bookworm and Science Fiction Fan. Still am really.
