Title: (Illegal) Hispanics flee Arizona ahead of immigration law

Arizona's tough new immigration enforcement law is fueling an exodus of Hispanics from the state seven weeks before it goes into effect, according to officials and residents in the state. Though no one has precise figures, reports from school officials, businesses and individuals indicate worried Hispanics — both legal and illegal — are leaving the state in anticipation of the law, which will go into effect July 29.

Schools in Hispanic areas report unusual drops in enrollment. The Balsz Elementary School District is 75% Hispanic, and within a month of the law's passage, the parents of 70 students pulled them out of school, said District Superintendent Jeffrey Smith. The district lost seven students over the same one-month period last year, and parents tell Smith the Arizona law is the reason for leaving.

TRENDS: Ariz. Latinos register as Democrats CENSUS: Ariz. immigration law makes count tougher POLL: More Americans want tight immigration laws IN CALIFORNIA: Boycotts over Ariz. immigration law

"They're leaving to another state where they feel more welcome," he said.

The measure, signed into law April 23 by Republican Gov. Jan Brewer, requires a police officer to determine a person's immigration status if they are stopped, detained or arrested and there is "reasonable suspicion" they are in the country illegally.

About 100,000 illegal immigrants left Arizona after the state passed a law in 2007 that enhanced penalties on businesses that hired them, according to the Department of Homeland Security. Some early signs suggest another exodus.

Businesses serving the Hispanic community say business is down, signaling that illegal immigrants are holding on to cash in anticipation of a move from the state, said David Castillo, co-founder of the Latin Association of Arizona, a chamber of commerce for nearly 400 first-generation Hispanic business owners.

"(Brewer) signed the law, and everything fell apart," Castillo said. "It's devastating."

Jorge Vargas plans to move to New York City because his air-conditioning business relies mostly on Hispanics. "My business is completely dead," he said.

Juan Carlos Cruz, an illegal immigrant who has worked in plant nurseries for 20 years, huddled with dozens of relatives over the Memorial Day Weekend in the backyard of his brother's Phoenix-area home to plot out the family's next move to avoid what they say will be harassment by police. Virginia and California are the front-runners.

"If I were alone, I'd try to stay. But I have a family, and I have to find a place where we can live with more freedom," said Cruz, who hopes to move July 4 to blend in with holiday weekend traffic. "This is getting too hard."

Paul Senseman, a spokesman for Brewer, said it's difficult to gauge how many people are leaving because of the law, but he said he hears similar reports of people leaving the state.

"If that means that fewer people are breaking the law, that is absolutely an accomplishment," he said.

If my state enacted such a law, they'd flee to Canada.

I'm so sick of the so called plight of the illegal alien.

I'm an alien in my own fucking country, and I WAS BORN HERE.

At every turn I'm told I don't belong, that my word means nothing, that I need to shoulder more of the burden and most importantly, I need to shut up because I'm a racist, and or a bigot.

I live in a neighborhood that is working class. However, a good 70% of it, is Welfare drawing, SSDI collecting shitheads who are on the public dole. When their kids, or their own behaviors bring conflict with me, I'm immediately the bad guy.

Like for instance, you don't beat your white girlfriend up in front of me, you 150 lb sack of dickless dogshit. If your sorry ass is selling dope down the street, we're going to have a problem. If you think that your screaming children should be allowed to tear up my property, you've got a surprise coming.

I live in that sort of neighborhood, and oddly enough, you know who seems to be the best behaved? As crazy as it seems, it's the illegal alien family across the street that seems to have their shit together the most.

All the talking heads it would cost too much money to deport. People with the slightest bit of common sense know they would deport themselves if threatened.

Note that even legally present Hispanics - US citizens or those with green cards - are fleeing the state. This is a very bad sign.

There is nothing to blame for this except the intentional distortion and misrepresentation of the legislation by the left/progressives. Any person with sense would read the law and say "oh, ok, I see now, no biggie".

Anybody stupid enough to believe the progressives probably isn't a big loss to the community.

Duly noted. It's a good sign. These are people who aren't working, which doesn't help the economy. AZ will save lots of money in the wake of the exodus--education, WIC, social services, reduced crime.

If they are working and they quit their job in this economy to make a statement, then it's better for the AZ gene pool for them to be gone. Good luck finding work in CA!! That state is broke too. Real smart move. Another person who WANTS to work and NEEDS a job will be waiting in the wings to do that person's job, waving an ADIOS AMIGO sign.

The main reason the Dims are trying to get a court to put a stay on the law.

The Dims fear the danger of a good example in Arizona. They can't afford to let people see just how much this "cheap labor" by illegals costs a state.

If they did, imagine how fast laws against illegal aliens would be passed.

DC is second only to Chicago in ranking for murder capital of the US.....speaks volumes about the corrupt politicians in DC.

What do these two cities have in common? Gun control. : )

Your assumption that legal Hispanics in Arizon are not working but are a public burden, and your talk about the "gene pool", definitely peg you.

We'll see how many jobless Anglos move to Arizona to fill the vacancies for the menial jobs that the Hispanics were doing.

Why do you assume that legal Hispanics only do menial jobs? That seems like a pretty racist assumption.

When Oklahoma passed their law last year over 120,000 invaders fled into Kansas, Missouri, and Arkansas. It required the building of new schools in some counties, which the PUBLIC EDUCATION SYSTEM completely welcomed with arms wide open.

My point is IF they are legal and they are quitting their jobs to flee AZ in this economy, then they are idiots.

My assumption IS that those who are leaving are not working and are a public burden. Why don't you post some proof of these legal and employed people are moving out of AZ?

Gee, with a 10% unemployment rate, I don't think this will be a problem. Employers will have to pay real wages, not depressed wages for Hispanics to do all those menial jobs. What a crime against humanity!! Teenagers will be able to find a job again.

the "Night Stalker" Richard Ramirez was an anchor baby, born in El Paso.

In the 6 years I lived in Los Angeles I saw more blood and guts than all the years before and since combined.

Mexicans, particularly Mestizos put a low premium on human life and they knife and shoot for reasons that Anglos seldom understand, reasons that are part of the "Mexican cultural imperative."

The most unsavory Latin people (IMO) are Puerto Ricans, but Mexicans are not far behind.
