Mexico Wants Nebraska Murder Trial Delayed

The Mexican government is urging a trial delay for the man accused of sexually assaulting and killing a 3-year-old girl in her South Sioux City, Nebraska home last year.

The trial for Melecio Camacho-De Jesus of Sioux City is scheduled to begin Monday in Dakota County.

He's charged with first-degree murder and burglary and could face the death penalty if convicted of attacking and killing Evelyn Verdugo Paniagua while her family slept on May 23, 2009.

The motion filed Wednesday for Mexico says Camacho-De Jesus is a Mexican citizen and urges a delay so attorneys can prepare an insanity defense. The judge has denied previous defense requests for a delay, saying attorneys waited too long to introduce an insanity defense.
