The idea has been kicking around for a number of years that modern humans may have picked up some valuable genes by mating with Neanderthals (kind of like Clan of the Cave Bear, that really odd series of romance novels set in caveman days that were huge bestsellers a generation ago). A new study supports that theory. John Hawks has the background. The idea is that if Neanderthals were off evolving by themselves in the frigid North for a few hundred thousand years, they likely would have developed some well-honed genes for dealing with the difficulties of life outside the tropics. The fastest way for modern humans migrating out of the tropics to acquire traits optimized for surviving winters, or whatever, would have been to interbreed with Neanderthals.
Poster Comment: I read an article a few day ago in which they finally proved, genetically, that non-African populations interbred with Neanderthals, especially Europeans. I have thought this for years and I believe it accounts for European superiority over the other races when it comes to creativity, etc. I have what the French call a "Neanderthal toe." Some believe the Celts have the most Neanderthal ancestry, since the Neanderthals were fair-skinned and red-haired an blond. It may also account for the Celtic warrior thing. Even Patton said the Scots-Irish were the most fierce warriors in the world and have never been defeated. All of this is going to be very interesting the more information comes out.

My second is the same length or a hair longer than my big toe. Do I get to join the Neanderthals officially? When asked my race on a census form or job application, can I list myself as Neanderthal? Supposedly, Cro-Magnons all had a longer big toe and Neanderthals all had a longer second toe. This supposed Neanderthal toe is also associated with European royalty and with higher intelligence.
From March of The Titans Chapter 1 "Although Neanderthal man was slow witted, he was an advance on Homo Erectus. Once again, however, there is no clearly established link to modern White racial types. The results of DNA tests carried out on Neanderthal remains by researchers at the University of Glasgow, UK, and published in the journal Nature in March 2000, proved conclusively that modern humans do not have Neanderthal ancestors in their family tree, and are this completely unrelated. Neanderthal man's physical characteristics were epitomized by the heavy browed skull and generally his arms were longer in relation to his body size. He was prognathic - which means that the forehead slopes back and the teeth stick out significantly - usually further than the furthest point of the nose or the chin. The first modern White racial type only emerged between approximately 40,000 BC and 15,000 BC in differing parts of Europe and the Near East. This time period is known as the Late Paleolithic period, also known generically as the Stone Age. This first racial type is known as Cro-Magnon man - after a site in the Dordogne region of France where the first skeletal remains were found. Cro-Magnon man is the first biped life form with whom modern Whites can clearly claim a direct genetic affinity. White racial history therefore begins around the year 35,000 BC - and so it is with the Late Paleolithic period that the story in this book really begins." New evidence might render this text obsolete.

Yes, dark blond with red highlights and hazel eyes, green mostly with brown and yellow flecks. Strong Czech genes with German and Swede mixed in too.

Someone like Stan Gooch, who has supported the Neanderthal hypthesis for decades, predicted correctly Neanderthals had red hair. He also claims certain traits, such as ADD/ADHD/bipolar/schizophrenia/creativity, come from our Neanderthal ancestry. As a child I would have been diagnosed as Attention Deficit Disorder without Hyperactivity. Most boys diagnosed with ADHD have blond hair. Scizophrenia is associated with red hair.
