(Reuters) - Scientists studying swingers -- straight couples who regularly swap sexual partners and indulge in group sex at organized meeting -- say they have higher rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) than prostitutes. Dutch researchers publishing their work in the British Medical Journal showed that older swingers -- those over the age of 45 -- are particularly vulnerable and yet are a group largely ignored by healthcare services. With estimates that the swinger population could be many millions across the world, the scientists said there was a risk this untreated group could act as an STI "transmission bridge to the entire population." "Although exact estimates are unavailable, the swingers' population is probably large," wrote Anne-Marie Niekamp, who worked on the study with colleagues from Maastricht University. The Dutch study analyzed the numbers of patients seeking treatment in 2007 and 2008 at three sexual health clinics in South Limburg in the Netherlands. The clinics have recorded whether a patient is a swinger since the start of 2007, in an attempt to track infection rates among this group. During the study period, there were just under 9,000 consultations at the three clinics. One in nine of the patients was a swinger, with an average age of 43. Overall, combined rates of Chlamydia and gonorrhea were just over 10 percent among straight people, 14 percent among gay men, just under 5 percent in female prostitutes, and 10.4 percent among swingers, they found. And female swingers had higher infection rates than male swingers. One in 10 older swingers had Chlamydia and around one in 20 had gonorrhea. Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmitted disease among women and in 70 percent of cases causes no symptoms. The bacterial infection can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, ectopic pregnancy and infertility. Gonorrhea is another bacterial infection which can also lead to infertility if left untreated. Niekamp said that while other high risk groups, such as young straight people, gay men and prostitutes, were relatively easy for healthcare service to identify and target for advice and help, swingers were generally a hidden community. "That makes them very hard to reach," she said in a telephone interview. "Because they are so hidden and in some ways also stigmatized, it is hard for them to come forward for STI testing and treatment."

It's worth emphasizing that these comparisons took place in England and Holland, two countries that have legalized and licensed brothels. I have no doubt that the prostitutes in the survey work in the licensed places. Those places have rules about condom use, safe sex, and so forth.

Here's the news blip that went along with his pretty picture: Steven Holten, 46, of Reno arrested June 18, 2010, by the Sparks Police Department at Glendale Park on suspicion of disorderly conduct. Holten made headlines in Reno in 2004 upon his arrest on a federal charge of transmitting a threat, related to mass e-mails he sent on Sept. 20, 2004 promising murder and mayhem to minorities, gays and anyone against “white power.” He also threatened a “holocaust for our enemies” in Reno and California. Holten, according to court records, has been suffering from AIDS for years. He claimed to be the Nevada leader of the Aryan Nations, and police said he had been actively recruiting members in Reno. Authorities also learned he had purchased a gun before he sent out the e-mails. Soon after he was released from federal prison on probation for the e-mails in 2005, he began distributing fliers in the Reno- Sparks area looking for men, namely Hispanics, to meet him for sex in parks, court records show. A man had sent Sparks police a letter saying he had seen another man at the park abandon his children in the car and perform a sex act with Holten in the bushes. That letter prompted a police sting that led to his October 2005 arrest and later conviction of a sex offense for showing a detective his penis. At that time, he was wearing “Nazi gear” that included a coat, combat boots, a shaved head and his signature lightning bolt neck tattoos.

Point granted. It is also likely that you would not net a lot of needle freak Hooker/Junkies in such a study. That said, while I think prostitution is degrading to both the woman and the John, it should be legalized and licensed here as well. It is a Public Health measure and a "crime" that does not involve coercion. It was not uncommon in the old west for widows with children to go to work in the local brothel to support their family. Not an optimum solution, but a survivable one.

When 26 yr old Anna Nicole Smith married 89 yr old oil tycoon J. Howard Marshall it was clearly a sex for money agreement. It could be argued that many marriages are based on the expectation of sex for him and money/security for her. Many men would agree that if not for a woman's sex there would be a bounty on them all. That "down low straight men" concept is an oxymoron. It's gays who don't have the courage to be gay, endangering their straight partners in their quest to satisfy lust. That roadside hook up reminds me of the airport bathroom hook ups where Larry Craig was tapping his toes.

That roadside hook up reminds me of the airport bathroom hook ups where Larry Craig was tapping his toes. I dunno, the guys that tied Matthew Shepard to a fence and left him to die like to beat faggots up before or after they have sex with them just to reassure themselves that they are indeed straight and repulsed by homos. To suggest that they're bull queers would be an insult which would probably result in a brutal assault and then forced fellatio to relieve their sexual tension.
