Dirtboffins argue for lawn-style perennial grainfields

Agro-boffins in America say that mankind could be on the verge of the "biggest agricultural breakthrough in 10,000 years", as researchers close in on "perennial grains".

At the moment, most grain grown around the world has to be replanted after every crop. Farming so-called "annual" grain of this sort consumes a lot of resources and is hard on the land, which is especially worrying as half the world's population lives off farmland which could easily be rendered unproductive by intensive annual grain harvests.

"People talk about food security," says soil science prof John Reganold. "That's only half the issue. We need to talk about both food and ecosystem security."

Reganold and his fellow dirtboffin Jerry Glover argue that perennial grain - in addition to not needing replanting, so saving on passes of farm machinery over the ground, fuel etc - would have a much deeper and more powerful root system than annuals, rather like a well-kept lawn. This would mean that it used water much more efficiently; and water is often a major issue in agriculture and its impact on its surroundings.

Other benefits of a deep perennial root system beneath farmers' fields would be less erosion and better carbon sequestration. Perhaps most tellingly of all, such a field might need as little as 3 per cent of the fertilisers required by annuals. Not only are nitrate fertilisers energy-intensive to make, they are also prone to washing out of fields to pollute water supplies, kill habitats and cause other eco mischief. Perennial fields would also require much less in the way of herbicides to control weeds.

At the moment, perennial grains capable of matching annuals don't exist. However, Reganold and Glover argue that they can be bred with sufficient effort: it's purely a matter of resources put into research. It's perhaps worth noting that there's not as much obvious revenue in perennials for major agro firms as there is in some kinds of annuals - there would be no continual requirement for new seed.

The two researchers, and many colleagues in the business, argue that with enough development cash perennial grain could be available in less than 20 years - representing, in their view, as great a step forward in food production as the original shift by the human race out of hunter-gathering and into farming in the first place.

The assembled dirt experts have convinced the editors of hefty boffinry mag Science, where their arguments are presented (subsciption required for full text). ®

for a long time now there has been this reflexive type exponential reaction of polarity returning to balance whenever tyrannical attempts are made to control energy relating to freedom in favor of more control.

whats been the pattern is the darkside makes these attempts and then the opposite result occurs, but in a magnitude of thousands of times greater in proportion.

an example, just a few because i don't feel like listing them all, is the internet....the 'brotherhood' has always run on secrecy, and evil always has needed deception to be viable.

so, they've tried to control information and belief systems, etc, by owning all the media outlets and organized religions. Well, then, here comes the internet, an analog to collective consciousnes and precursor to a type of super noetic awareness linked up web of instant, non physical knowing.

Anything that can be known is now out there on the net..boom. No more secrets...and soon for many, but already here for some, is the quality of being able to know anything at all simply by intending to do so, by thought alone. Naturally, this is why the information control structures have gone out of their way to tell you to forget about psi phenomenon, since such a thing would really make impossible any control whatsoever...and all two faced infiltrators can't stay concealed.

Another example of this is Monsanto, who wants to control another form of energy, food....okay then, fine....the next step (and its always super simple and elegant when its coming from the higher realms) is perennial seeds coming along. See how many farmers want to pay for their filthy seeds when they only need to plant these perennials once. Game over.

Big oil, wants to control access to other zpe energy, hydrogen, etc....what happens? Massive move towards 'free' energy technology...all over the place and in about a hundred different forms, from new solar film to Steorns magnetic motor to the more exotic stuff.

You can see this all over the place, and its only getting more momentum.

Then Next Really Big Thingy will occur when they attempt to restrict access to information on the internet, since that is sort of the next evolutionary facet of this return to balance and you get a stepped up reaction every level up where an attempt to control is made....When that happens, you're going to have the reflexive aspect occur once again, but this time, its going to be having information all the way out of the box.....but why spoil that surprise, since its going to be too much fun watching the waterheads and livestock people lose their shit and completely unglued when a reality arrives they simply were never prepared for.

Good info on perennial grains and good post on the trends. Thanks for posting!

You are hinting that, should "they" try to "turn off" the Internet (by the mechanism of disabling the DNS servers, since Darpa designed the net too well) the reaction will be a mass mind shift into high psi capability, checkmating the totalitarian dreamers! Bring it on, evil-doers!

Anger? as a first reaction to get your a$$ moving, once you see through the Media Matrix and set yourself free from your lifelong mind control collar. Sustainable? not enough to screen your intention to be free from the Talosians, who can’t read primitive emotions but know what you watch on cable/sat, read on the Internet and eat. Our ultimate weapon is laughter and amused detachment at the folly of the would-be emperors. Fear mongers HATE it when the FEAR card doesn’t work. The humiliation of being seen as merely a naked ape is THEIR big fear. Laugh the bastards off the stage! Tell your friends that we can build a real civilization from the ruins of the totalitarian game!

seems the process is underway, and inevitable. attempting to thwart these changes builds up some kind of back pressure and results in a greater outpouring of whatever was being attempted to be denied.

mckennas timewave zero which indicates increases in novelty as we approach 2012 seems to be holding true, as many of these things are very novel.

it is not possible to use old ways of control in the face of novel situations that increase as time goes on.

BigAgra and BigGMO, will not, will not, give up easily.

And our courts will back them, not us.

Just as they've done in the past.

of course.

but the other trend you may have noticed is that all the major 'pillars' of society are becoming increasingly irrelevant to everyone. they no longer are of enough value that people have sufficient confidence or satisfaction with them to overlook their horseshit.

examine the decay of:

1. government: the majority of people now do not trust the govt, and dislike the fed gov. No one has confidence in them. That is the effective end of it, once confidence is gone.

2. economy: as above, fiat money is a confidence game, no one trusts or likes any entity involved with finance. Even moreso, more people now know exactly what the federal reserve it.

3. media: print and broadcast journalism are actually dead, begging for bailout money. no one needs them, no one trusts them. confidence is gone, they are finished. independent media, bloggers, you tube, networking, etc, has eaten their lunch.

4. religion: all major religions have had massive exposes showing their leaders, priests, etc, to be complete degenerates and whores, flying in private jets and screwing male hookers. Some followers remain, but overall, people have turned away. Justified and wise apostasy.

compare that to how people felt just two generations ago about these institutions...they were beyond reproach. Walter Cronkite was trusted, the churches were trusted, the government was never doubted, banks were respected, etc.

attempting to maintain control when you are already disliked only solidifies resolve against you and polarizes opinion.

the old guys new how to run the show, with subtle and soft ploys that never riled up people...their inbred progeny is arrogant and foolhardy, and only is making people more aware that they are being gamed.

We need to get some nads and start growing hemp in the back yard. : )

"The conscious and intelligent manipulation of the organized habits and opinions of the masses is an important element in democratic society. Those who manipulate this unseen mechanism of society constitute an invisible government which is the true ruling power of our country. ... We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas suggested, largely by men we have never heard of." Edward Bernays, Father of Public Relations
