In response to a letter I wrote Mike, his response was predictably dissapointing.

Here it is:

Dear Thomas and Susan:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the recent incident between members of Israel’s defense forces and several cargo ships. I appreciate hearing from you.

As you may know, on May 31, 2010, Israeli Defense Forces attempted to board and redirect six vessels bound for Gaza. The cargo ships were carrying 10,000 tons of aid materials. While five of the six ships were peacefully redirected to the Israeli port of Ashdod for inspection, the boarding of the sixth ship, the Mavi Marmara, became violent.

The events of May 31st are not yet clear. Initial reports indicate that the Israeli commandos were attacked by passengers of the Mavi Marmara when they attempted to board the ship. The incident resulted in the deaths of nine passengers, including an American, and the injury of several Israeli commandos.

The United Nations Security Council and President Obama have called for an impartial investigation into the incident, and I fully support that effort. I have every confidence in Israel’s culture of dissent and self-examination, even in times of great national stress.

Israel has every right to defend itself from security threats and to protect its people from indiscriminate rocket fire from Gaza. That effort includes a close examination of what goes in and out of the region. At the same time, the incident underscores the need to resolve the situation in Gaza. While its right to defend itself can never be questioned, Israel must help ease conditions of extreme economic hardship in Gaza and other areas where Palestinians have been displaced from their homes. Israeli officials should continue to work with the U.S., the Palestinian Authority, and Egypt to pursue this goal, while at the same time maintaining the effectiveness of Israel’s security perimeter.

I believe the status quo is actually strengthening Hamas’s control over Gaza. We must consider new approaches that allow the people of Gaza to work toward a better future – a future with alternatives to Hamas.

My thoughts and prayers are with the families of those who were killed or injured during this terrible incident. When leaders work together to ease the conditions in Gaza, the economy improves and tensions subside. We also reduce the likelihood that such tragedies will happen again.

For more information about my priorities as a U.S. Senator, I invite you to visit my website at bennet.senate.gov/. Again, thank you for contacting me.

Sincerely,

Michael Bennet United States Senator

What he should have said:

We must consider new approaches that allow the people of the United States and the World to work toward a better future – a future without jews, israel and zionism.
