Hey, all of you dog lovers out there.

My little ol' greyhound is having renal failure problems.

I want to switch her from ridiculously expensive dog food with big pharma meds in every kibble. She doesn't even like it at all. She needs Ab to make her meals from scratch each day.

I've done a little research and found a few options for a homemade plan. Apparently, phosphorus is a must to keep out of her diet as the kidneys can't process.

Has anybody had a pup with this problem? Any first hand experience in the matter to share to improve the health of the cutest little greyhound in the world, my Hannah Hound?

Thanks in advance for all of your helpful advice. : )

Start adding meat to her diet? Dogs are designed to be carnivores. Look at coyotes: they'll raid a watermelon patch occasionally, but they're carcass- scavengers/meat-eaters for the most part.

lol.....dogs like meat?

She has meat, but you have to be careful of the amount because renal failure makes it hard for her to process the proteins. From what I've read, this requires the diet to have the perfect ratio of protein, starch, carb and fat so that the kidneys can process it all at optimum level.

As a greyhound, who are generally raised on really high protein diets, she's a sucker for the carbs. Don't leave the bagels on the counter......she'll surf and snarf first chance she gets.

Thanks Loddy, I'll investigate that one in relation to her kidney function. : )

When cats have renal failure, the vet pushes prescription canned food which is pork with some chicken and rice. Apparently beef is prohibited. He expected our cat to eat nothing else. Fat chance! You either have to make their food or buy very expensive high-end, natural foods for your pets. Otherwise, the pet food is poison.

Do a google on renal failure in dogs. I'm sure you'll get lots of ideas. Dogs aren't finicky so it's easier to feed them.

I've read raw meat is best for dogs. I've also read all the necessary digestive enzymes have to be present for protein to break down properly. [see Dr. Kelly's cancer cure]. Mike Adams at naturalnews offers a pre-digested fish protein you might want to check out [I don't know that much about it.] RAW vegetables can also provide all necessary protein...an idea I'm trying to wrap my brain around...I keep reminding myself about horses, and cows, and elephants, but you might have a hard time getting your pup to go along with that...and they have all the necessary enzymes to digest them. I've read some interesting things about baking soda helping to slow down or arrest renal failure. You might want to check it out, and ask your doctor about it. If your vet is not a holistic and or homeopathic vet, you might want to check that out as well. I think Shirleys-wellness-cafe has a list of homeopathic vets, and come to think about it, there was a downloadable dog and cat book there. I highly recommend the book Natural Healing for Dogs and Cats [I think] by Dr. Pitcairn. It includes diets.

Thanks Ratcat.

I've been a Googlin' and I've found four recipes. We did the potato one yesterday and are trying rice today.

Hannah sure was finicky about the scrip food. Food should be enjoyed...she's enjoyed her meals yesterday and today. : )
