in another thread, the subject of race came up & how some people are so overly sensitive to the matter. i grew up in a town where, in the late 70's, during the miniseries ROOTS, blacks actually rioted at the public high school. my older blonde haired sister, who had a white car no less, was jumped. about 15 of them jumped on her gremlin screaching something or other about 'whitey'. Thank God my brother was a jock & the only white kid on the basketball team. he was also a brawler, so when one of the niggers said 'hey, that's white boy's sister', they relented & exited the top of her white vehicle. Another time, i had a lemonade/candy stand outside the house. two blacks came up, gulped down their lemonade, then informed me they weren't paying. well i was a little kid, what could i do? Right as the slobs strutted down the street, my sister drove down the street towards home. ha ha, i knew this would be good. i jumped up waving my arms at her. she knew something was up, & sped up. i shouted what theyd done, &
Poster Comment: con'td... she did a 'dukes of hazard' 180. they ran like jackrabbits. funny as hell. she actually caught them, shouted at them & they apologized. being half hillbilly & half Italian, racial jokes & cultural humor was never 'verboten' . today it seems everyone is overly sensitive & paranoid of differences. My wife is Mexican but i don't have problem with people's varying views on race. God created all men,but to strike fear over discussion of the race issue is silly & oppressive. how were you brought up about race?

i have no memories of feelings one way or the other about race as a young child. i grew up in an all white suburban neighborhood. there were no black students in any of the schools i attended until high school. i think there were fewer than five and all were considered oreos. do you remember that term? i do remember my Sicilian father expressing some distrust and dislike for the blacks he encountered as a D C transit bus driver and later owner/operator of a Shell gas station near the D C line. it wasn't until my young adulthood that i came into contact with low class white hating blacks with the 'tude.
yeah i heard that one. i didn't rebel and leave private school, so i never knew too many blacks. i think there were no more than 4 the whole time. it was all white & mexicans. i never even knew or met a jew until adulthood.

__________________________________________________________ At the grade school I went to there might have been maybe ten blacks and they all fit in. They were just part of the gang. We had a lot more Japanese than blacks - my Samurai Scout Master Mike Michigami could have done duty as a Marine D.I.. High School was not a lot different - out of 2500 students there might have been 50 to 100 blacks - and it was the same thing - they fit in and adopted the culture in which they lived. Race was never an issue per se until the heavy media coverage of radical blacks and the rejection by some of "White" culture. I never met any "niggers" until I joined the Navy. That was a different environment, but on a small ship like a Destroyer you tend to depend on each other so there was not that much friction - although there were the carefully concealed jokes told amongst each other like kids sneaking around "talking dirty". Our biggest asshole was a Samoan kid with the last name, and I kid you not, of Ape (prounced Aw-pay). He was about 5'8" tall and about 6 feet across the shoulders (slight exxageration). The upshot is that I never learned to distrust or dislike blacks for the fact of being black. It was always on a person to person basis. They were part of the group and fit in - they just had a darker suntan. The ghetto dwellers are a different breed and it is a different culture. Just like an old hillbilly they distrust anyone different and they have had it drummed into them through culture, community, and the media, that ALL white people hates dem an jes wans to make dem slaves again. It is a pathological self defeating culture that has social pressure that encourages ignorance i.e., not actin' white which in turn prevents advancement and so it is a vicious trap. Not that blacks have no reason to not resent some of the injustice they have faced as a people, but going around assuming that every white person is a "Cracka" is no different in any significant way than some toothless Klansman to whom all blacks are "niggers". That being said I am NOT some weepy liberal who is going to go wander through the dark heart of the black part of town on foot - not during the day and definitely not after dark. I'm not suicidal in the least.

We had 2700 students and I don't think we had any blacks. I can believe it. I wouldn't have thought so a few years ago but then I voted for George Bush and believed 9/11 line too.

My parents never uttered a racist comment that I can recall. I went to an all white Catholic grade school for 8 years where most of the kids were Irish Catholic. My dad and many of theirs were either City Cops or City Firemen ... and we were almost like family to each other. (My dad was a fireman). The firemen I knew were a bunch of good old guys that up until my generation usually brought their kids into the Department. Political correctness / Affirmative Action ended that generational thing. I played sports for the P.A.L. Club (Police Athletic League), and I was on the swimming and diving team for Brookside Park, City of Indianapolis. The P.A.L. Club introduced me to blacks. Our team was all white but the teams we played were primarily black (and about 20 years older and 2 feet taller than us). We got smoked nearly every game. These guys would pull all kinds of shit, like pinching the runner in the pile after a tackle. The exact opposite thing took place with the swimming and diving team. There was only one black team and they never won an event. However, they were good kids unlike the ones cheating at football and other sports using their younger brothers birth certificates. My High School was the largest in the country at the time I attended. Arsenal Technical High School, Indpls, Ind. had 10,000 students and it was a 50/50 mix between whites and blacks. I graduated in 1968. Racial strife was prevalent and we had riots, and a couple of students were actually killed. We had race wars and fights pretty much daily. I remember we used to load up my buddy Mike's station wagon with bb gun toting teens and drive around to the side of the campus where the blacks usually entered. We'd drive real slow and open fire on the black kids and laugh our asses off while they opened up their umbrellas and used them for shields. There were brawls most days during all of the lunch periods, 4th thru 7th periods, about 4 hours. There had been a large square fish pond that the school had knocked the corners out of because the kids were eating the goldfish. It became known as nigger square because the blacks hung out there during the lunch periods. We would take clubs to school and hide them behind the lunch room so that we could "clear the square" each period. The funny thing is I had a lot of black friends and it seemed like the riots took place in spite of our friendship. Those were different times. For a couple of years I lived in a place called Brightwood. This place was occupied by low income blacks and whites ... niggers and white trash. Oddly enough, the blacks and whites got along really well here. In the end, racial hatreds are fomented by those with agendas that need to keep people from uniting to prevent their agendas. I have mostly white friends these days because I like my own kind of people and there aren't many minorities where I live. I explain my racial position like this. I prefer my own, but hold the door for any woman regardless of race and make every determination based upon actions not colors. We (races) are different in many ways. So what ! The differences are what make us unique and trying to act like they don't exist is some type of psychological denial problem. ALL people are equal in the eyes of God but have diverse characteristics and behaviors that cannot be denied despite all the bullshit on TV and in the movies.

I've been married to the same lovely Chinese woman for over thirty years. I'm a Southerner and I still have mixed emotions when I see a white girl with a black dude. I have seen a few of those relationships that seemed genuine but I believe that most of them stem from the fact that the white male is being always portrayed as the "oppressor" and the main problem in the world. I believe that a lot of white women buy into that.

as an aside, my nephew is married to a black woman. their two children are my sister's grandchildren. politically they're conservatives and can's stand Obama.
I was raised in an all-white town and went to an all-white high school and it wasn't until I went away to college that I learned how dumb some blacks are -- it was clear the standards were lowered for them to get into the university.

I had to have been 3 or 4 years old. WHen shopping with my mom and grandmother, I said something like "did you notice that all blacks look alike"? Funny I still remember that. In HS, there was a token nigger. But he behaved himself. I learned later, when I was exposed to them more, that they are only brave when they have numbers on their side. I learned later that they destroy cities one neighborhood at a time, and that they will murder for the silliest of reasons. .

My parents never talked about race at home but when we went to Tulsa (their hometown and mine for my first six months on Earth) to visit my relatives they would avoid certain "areas" of Tulsa. There were no explanations of why this was so, it was just taken on dogmatic faith. I later in life read for myself about the race riot in Tulsa that basically destroyed the black part of town, but that was never mentioned once in my presence by any of my relatives. There were only two black kids in my elementary school. I still remember their names: LeRoy and Charlotte. Then my family moved to a new town and I entered the 7th grade in a school where the small group of blacks were all descendants of 4 or 5 slave families in the area. I never had any interactions with them due to my taking Honors classes every chance I got. After high school I went to a 99% white local junior college. When I transferred to a nearby university and saw the black student union and the sour faces standing around the entrance to it I had an epiphany and realized that all that bad race riot stuff I saw on TV growing up had been totally absent from my life, thank God. I'm a race realist, I just prefer my own race so that makes me a separatist, too.

Brooklyn, back then, was basically balkanized; the Irish lived in Flatbush,
the Italians in Bensonhurst, the Polish, Greenpoint and the Jews in Coney
Island and Ocean Parkway. The blacks and Puerto Ricans were in Brownsville &
Bed Sty. As I was growing up, the barriers slowly came down and the
neighborhoods became more mixed. We all got along because economically, nobody
had more than the next guy. Summer vacation was spent in the school yard
playing baseball until the sun went down. Stickball was a mainstay in
Brooklyn. High school for me, the son of a cop, was in Williamsburg, which was
heavily black & Hispanic. In 1963, my freshman year, traveling back and forth
on the Utica Ave bus (more than an hour each way) was quite an adventure. It
wasn't uncommon to have rocks and bottles thrown at us as we rode, simply
because we were white. We learned to ride that bus with the windows closed in
certain areas. This was pre air conditioning on public transportation, but
safety before sweat. It also wasn’t uncommon for us to open the windows to
listen to the black kids/men singing all those great tunes from Motown.
There’s a movie, “Heaven Help Us” that depicts to a “T” my high school years.
I highly recommend it. Organized sports were a hoot back then. We Irish
kids would travel into the black neighborhoods and play them. Our coaches were
cops & fireman, so we never worried about fights, but they happened anyway.
The first thing we were taught in football was when you’re in a pile, pull
your hands into your body, or else they will get stomped on by someone wearing
cleats. It only took one mistake to become a fast learner and we gave as good
as we took. As I recall we won most of those games because we worked better as
a team. The standard joke among us was that black teams fielded 11 halfbacks
who all wanted to star, rather than a standard team. To Artisan’s initial
point? We all called each other names in fun. It was never taken personally.
All that changed when the radical left grabbed hold of the Civil Rights
movement and made it a cash cow, and trust me, you haven’t seen the radical
left until you lived in NYC. There's so much more, but that’s a thumbnails
sketch of life in Brooklyn, late 50s, 60s. I will end with this; racial
problems were far, far better before LBJs Great Society. That massive
government enema created the racial hucksters that today are presented as
black leaders. IMO, nothing could be further from the truth. Filibustering
that mess might have been the only sane thing the now, very dead Sen. Byrd,
ever did.
Amen. I grew up in a very segregated town in North TX where each race (black and white) lived on their sides of the railroad tracks. We each had our own theaters, restaurants, gas stations, churches, schools, etc. The county courthouse, where everyone had to interact to some degree, had White and Colored water fountains and restrooms. There was no welfare so the black families stayed intact as much as did the whites in the late fifties and early sixties. In 1964, my junior year in HS, two blacks, a boy and a girl, enrolled in the white school. (I've often wondered about why they did.) Anyway, there were zero problems. Thomas Williams went from being our star running back to the Naval Academy, which became his career. No clue about the girl. The Great Society was the Great Destroyer of the black family in America.
People are people regardless of color or eye shape. The genetic differences are simply superficialities. It is the person inside, their outlook, cultural reactions, and speech which are more the defining characteristics of "difference". That was something I discovered for myself years ago when I found myself getting annoyed over people speaking corrupted english and behaving in ways that were inconsiderate of others. I am much more likely to become seriously annoyed over poor manners and willful ignorance than the color of someones skin. If I become annoyed at a Black or Mexican it is for the same reasons I become annoyed at White Trash - poor manners and bad diction i.e., ignorance (not that I have not met people with bad diction who were exceptionally bright - but they usually have good manners). The language thing I finally identified for what it was - a knee-jerk cultural reaction to ignorance and an irrational reaction to the "auslander" (Germanic for outlander - meaning anyone not of one's own tribe or region - nowadays used deprecatingly to indicate strong parochialism or provincial attitudes).

My dad was a fireman and the entire department were like family. (Reminds me that the word Kin comes from the word "KIND" as in the same kind.) Our society would have us believe that we are bigots for having innate kinship with our own. I've soured on PC Crap ... but am always happy to see you smile !!!
