Romney, W.Va. (AP) -- All of Hampshire County is now designated as a chronic wasting disease containment area.

The West Virginia Division of Natural Resources said Monday that 12 deer tested in the county in the spring tested positive for the disease.

Another 15 deer killed during the fall 2009 hunting season also tested positive.

Chronic wasting disease affects the brains and nervous systems of deer and elk.

A total 74 deer have tested positive for the disease since the first case was confirmed in 2005.

All the cases have been in Hampshire County.

In a word, "UGH!"

My state changed the law to allow for the baiting of deer on private land a few years back. The down side to a feeder brimming with apples is deer rub noses and exchange saliva as they slobber on the food, and diseases spread like wildfire.

Twenty odd years ago deer hunting was my religion, but not anymore.

We've had no reported cases of CWD but we have had blue tongue and Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease (EHD) and once those reports came in I hunted perhaps two more years and quit.

I have no profound thoughts on this subject, just a deep sadness now. When the Lacey Act was passed in 1900 ending the commercialization of wildlife DE closed it's deer hunting, and we had no legal deer hunts for the next 57 years because it took that long to recover from the market hunting of deer.

Now we're up to our ears in white tails, but most are yearlings who are now breeding because so many young bucks are killed each year that there is no breeding hierarchy. The result is a weakened gene pool that is prone to disease and possible collapse. And, DE hunters, rugged individualists all refuse to participate in any voluntary effort to "let them go, let them grow!" Instead of taking does (the secret to deer control is doe control) they harvest too many young bucks, and at 1.5 yrs old bucks are dumber than a bag of hammers and when they start to get "the itch" they get very careless and walk right in front of shotguns.

I suppose that before long Delawareans will again learn what it was like between 1900 and 1957. Deer populations will either collapse or be too diseased to risk eating.

In an word, "UGH!"

We have no hunting in our subdivision (1500 acres) but I have to see a buck with more than a couple points. Out at the nearby store people keep asking to take the buck out back even though it's a crowded area and not hunting season. Meanwhile there is a doe with a useless front leg since I've been there (2006). Everybody knows about her and people say someone should put her out of her misery. The fact is she is no more miserable than all the other overcrowded does and young bucks.

A small point of disagreement with what you said, mature bucks are just as stupid as the young ones.

Thank you for your thoughts, purpleman.

"A small point of disagreement with what you said, mature bucks are just as stupid as the young ones."

When they're in full rut with swollen necks and "throbbing hearts" mature bucks will also commit serious tactical errors and get themselves shot, so I suppose you're correct.

I should clarify my remarks by writing that 1.5 year old bucks who've never been hunted are entirely too easy to kill, unlike older deer who have learned to elude hunters. We've all heard stories of big bucks who would actually crawl on their stomachs to avoid being seen when passing hunters in stands, and yearlings simply don't know enough to do this. But, I cannot say with any certainty that mature bucks that do know better would take such precautions when in full rut and "single minded of purpose". Once again you may be right.

I know a lot about deer but I lack a hell of a lot of knowing it all. I do know that I've seen more yearling bucks than any other deer when hunting. Even older does appear to be "smarter" (defined as "having honed their survival instincts") than "JR with his first crush".

Would you agree with that?

Yes, I should have added the "throbbing heart" qualification. The 15 or more pointer that landed on the roof of my saturn had that issue that evening. I braked, he slid off and stumbled into the woods. I would think you would see the young ones because there are more of them (simple statistics), but I could be missing the older ones because they are hiding (except when they charge towards my car in mating season).

Now that you mention it we see quite a few "2.5 yr olds and up" that are road killed here, too. They seem to be anxious to follow the estrus scent across busy highways and/or anxious to do battle with any other buck(s) attempting to herd the does up.

Perhaps older bucks and yearlings are both prone to "the stupids" but for slightly different reasons or under different conditions. A mature buck that may be wary of hunters but has successfully crossed highways in previous ruts is unaware of the dangers, just as many yearlings are clueless to the dangers of the scents and noises of hunters.

Of course they only have to be shot at once and they are quick studies. But any deer that gets hit at highway speeds may not have the chance to apply the newly acquired input.
