Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War. They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. What kind of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured. Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags. Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward. Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton. At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt. Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed.The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months. John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid. Remember: freedom is never free!

Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. ================================================================== In case you are unaware of what this torture included, American Patriots were considered "traitors to the Crown of England" and were castrated, then disemboweled before being finally dispatched by the Crown. Their bodies were often displayed in public town squares to terrorize patriots.

That could be debated. The two most noted intellectuals of the signers had little or no education.
Remember what they did to William Wallace! Until WWI the English were considered our enemies. I still consider them our enemies. To this day I believe we should have supported Germany, if anyone.

I really wish Martina would have changed the words to that song, and kept the stanza to honoring America. A separate song reworded with just the American theme would do us all proud. Not that she dishonored America in educating on alcoholism and spousal abuse, which are both rampant. The stanza of that song "Let Freedom Ring" is powerful. I hope many men who are quilty of abusing their wives will see and hear that video and be 'liberated' from alcohol addiction and spousal abuse.

We do the same thing as they did when we let it be known that our "leaders" do not have our loyalty and I'd rather see them hanging by hemp ropes on a makeshift gallows. .

I don't know about all that, but I have read things written at the time, wherein the Americans fighting against the Crown were referred to as "insurgents".

We shouldn't have gotten involved in something that was really of no concern to us. That's the problem with the government, at least since the early 1900's, tries to be the policeman for the world but that was never the intent of the founders.
Liberty is not a means to a higher political end. It is itself the highest political end. He (Gordon Duff) also implies that forcibly removing Obama, a Constitution-hating, on-the-down-low, crackhead Communist, is an attack on America, Mom, and apple pie. I swear these military people are worse than useless. Just look around at the condition of the country and tell me if they have fulfilled their oaths to protect the nation from all enemies foreign and domestic. Busy like crazy. Personal life turned upside down, professional life through the meat grinder, but working on a couple of things that should bring in quite a bit of residual income once finished.
