We recently celebrated “Independence Day” in this country. Unfortunately, in post-America, the whole thing has turned into a farce, a parody of what once were our God-given liberties. We are, supposedly, a “free” country, so the politicians tell us. After 911 George Bush informed us that the Muslims hated us because of our freedoms. So to make sure they wouldn’t hate us anymore because of our freedoms he gave us the Patriot Act. Now they may hate us for other reasons, but it is surely not because of our “freedoms.” “Oh, but America is a free country” you say. To which I say “hogwash.” Our Founding Fathers would never have put up with what we ignorantly label as “freedom” today. They would have rebelled. What we naively call freedom would have, to them, been the rankest form of slavery.

So what do our “freedoms” really consist of today? Well, we are totally “free” to do whatever the federal government tells us to do. We are totally “free” to think as the federal government wants us to. We are free to enter our children in government propaganda factories we call public schools so they can be indoctrinated to think they are as free as we think we are. We are free to practice all manner of sexual perversions because these have now become the new “freedoms” (in reality they are the old bondage). And we are free to go along with banning God from the public square.

We shared all these freedoms with the Soviet Union under Communism. Oh, and lest we forget, we are, thanks to political correctness, now free not to “offend” anyone who has a problem with the Christian faith--in fact we are now obligated not to offend them. Today, telling people that “Jesus is Lord” would probably be classified as a hate crime. And, we are “free” to state such things within the confines of the four walls of our churches. Some pastors have even gone so far as to state that Christians should be satisfied being a “sub-culture.” And it seems that most folks in churches today, with some exceptions, love to have it so. It’s the new “loving” approach to the world out there—offend no one with the truth!

Yet the truth that Jesus is Lord, of everyone and everything in the universe, is a truth that is guaranteed to offend people. It is a statement that Jesus is sovereign over all people, presidents, politicians, movie actors, and street sweepers alike. They, and we, are all accountable to Him for all we do in our lives.

The ancient Romans didn’t much care for that “Jesus is Lord” stuff because it told the stark truth that Jesus was Lord, even over Caesar, which fact really ticked old Caesar off, as he thought he was the chief player in the game. To be told by the Christians that he wasn’t could not have made him and his minions overly happy. It’s no different with our modern Caesars, whether we call them presidents, senators, messiahs, or whatever. Often these people have an overly inflated view of their own importance. They honestly wonder how the world managed to struggle along for 6,000 years of recorded history before they burst upon the scene to straighten it all out. Would-be, tin pot dictators usually have that self-important view of themselves. Some cabals of them even go around creating problems so they can claim to be trying to straighten them out. Of course the price we are asked to pay for their grand efforts is the sacrifice of our God-given liberties, but they tell us they will make sure we are “safe.” Most prison inmates are “safe” too. Is that the kind of safety they are talking about? You’d better believe it! (Make sure the FEMA camps are all open for a nice long weekend).

And where are the Christians in all of this?

Do any of them oppose this insanity (because that’s what it is)? Thankfully, some do, but not enough. The vast majority, educated (indoctrinated) in public schools, are content to go along for the ride and are satisfied to be part of the “Christian sub-culture” that doesn’t question anything and tries to “be nice” to everybody. If you point out to them where the world seems to be headed presently they will quietly tell you “God is in control so don’t worry.” Loosely interpreted that means “when you see evil being perpetrated, just don’t do anything—sit back and let the Lord deal with it.” The fact that He might choose in some instances to deal with the evil through their efforts is a thought that never enters their thinking.

So how can Christians deal with apostates and anti-Christs in a loving manner? They can begin by telling them the truth and by exposing evil. They don’t need to do it in a mean-spirited way, but they do need to begin doing it. The truth that Jesus is Lord, even over some of their left-wing political schemes may make them mad. That’s tough! The Apostles, in their day, did not hesitate to confront rulers, both political and spiritual, with the truth.

Today, we’ve become too “loving” to do that.

The truth that Jesus is Lord in every area of life is one we’d better get on the stick and inform people about, even if they get mad and do’t want to hear it. If we are really “free and independent” then why has Jesus been banned from the public square? The answer should be obvious.

The relationship between morality and liberty is a directly proportional one.
